FUNERAL
MU J. S. CHAPMAN The funeral of Mr J. S. Chapman, of Tai Tapu, whose death occurred recently, took place at the Waimairi Cemetery on Thursday. The services at the house and the cemetery were conducted by the Rev. T. M. Curnow, of Lincoln. The chief mourners were Messrs E. W. Chapman, L. K. Chapman, H. W. Chapman, C. J. Chapman, A. C. Chapman, J. Cruse, and R. Kent. Pallbearers were Messrs A. Brown, E. H. Down, G. Kissel, K. Black, C. J. Forbes, and A. P. Hobson. Mr Chapman was for many years a storekeeper and popular resident of Southbridge. He was one of the founders, and was the first chairman of the Grocers’ United Stores Syndicate of Canterbury. In 1933, on the death of his brother, Mr E. F. Chapman, he came to Christchurch as buyer and manager of Grocers’ United Stores, Ltd. He held that position until the time of his death. Mr Chapman was keenly interested in the Master Grocers’ Federation. He was to have been elected chairman at the Dominion conference, last January, but ill-health prevented his attending.
