OBITUARY
MR R. S. GIBBS Mr Richard Solloway Gibbs, who died suddenly of heart seizure last Thursday, was born in Kaeo, North Auckland, in 1871. His parents were early settlers in the Whangaroa districts. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School. As a young man he was connected with the boat-building industry in Whangaroa harbour, where, at that time, luggers were built for the North Australian pearling industry. One of a crew of three, he sailed one of the luggers, a 12-ton ketch, to Thursday Island, on the north of Australia. He spent some time there. For the last 30 years Mr Gibbs lived in Christchurch. For some of that time he carried on business as a builder. He is survived by his widow and the family of his first wife. Members of his family are Miss Edith M. Gibbs and Messrs T. N. Gibbs, A. N. Gibbs, and R. J. Gibbs (Christchurch), Miss Marjorie Gibbs (Dunedin), and Mr W. F. Gibbs (Sydney), The funeral took place on Saturday at the Bromley cemetery. A service was held at the Richmond Mission Hall.
