GLOUCESTER STREET BRIDGE

CR. E. H. ANDREWS’S NOTICE OF MOTION A decision to widen the Gloucester street bridge over the Avon to give a carriageway of 42ft, was made at the last meeting of the Christchurch City Council; but at its next meeting in a fortnight the council will be asked to rescind the resolution authorising this work to be done. The chairman of the finance committee (Cr. E. H. Andrews) yesterday gave notice to move at the next meeting of the - council: “That the resolution passed at the last meeting of the council regarding the Gloucester street bridge be amended by deleting that portion relating to the widening of the bridge, and that provision be made to improve the approaches to the bridge in conjunction with the widening of Oxford terrace.”

Cr. Andrews’s motion will not affect the proposal of the council to widen Oxford terrace near the bridge. The cost of widening the bridge by 14ft was estimated at £IQBO. and that of widening Oxford terrace near the bridge was estimated at £370. The council adopted a recommendation that the work be put in hand, provision for the cost to be made in the current year’s estimates. The proposal originated in the desire of the traffic committee of the council to deviate traffic from the Square and to relieve congestion occurring in Colombo street through vehicular traffic being held up behind trams at Armagh street. The present width of the bridge carriageway is 28ft, and • there is a six-foot footway on either side. It was proposed to widen the bridge by 14ft on the south or up-stream side, which would bring it back level with the building line on the south side of Gloucester street. This would provide a 42 feet carriageway, and enable the south-east tpproach to be altered and made easier.

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union ol North Canterbury have issued invitations to women’s organisations of Christchurch to hear a "peace” address by Dr. R. R. D. Milligan. This will be given at St. Paul’s schoolroom to-morrow, at 2.30 p.m.
