BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Lyttelton Borough Council met last evening. Present; The Mayor (Mr I, E. Sutton), Crs. R. Fenton, D. E. L. Collett. J. N. Neville, G. S. Morris, A. G Sinclair, T. B. Hempstalk, J. D. Sargentina, W. W. Toy, and W. T. Foster. Misses H. E. and E. Eaton. Cressy terrace, wrote consenting to the runring of water mains through their property. A long letter from the Lyttelton Harbour Board, setting out the position regarding the deadlock which had arisen on the proposal to transfer portion of the reclamation area to the council as a recreation ground, was referred to the borough solicitors for £n opinion. Telephones in Lyttelton The following letter from the Post-master-General (the Hon. F. Jones) to Mr T. H. McCombs. MR. about telephones in Lyttelton, was received from Mr McCombs:— "In reference to your further representations for the establishment of an automatic exchange in Lyttelton and for a reduction of the charge for tails from public call offices situated in that town, the position so far as tite establishment of an automatic exchange is concerned is still the same a- when my letter to you of February 3 was written. The matter is I nked up with the whole matter of exchange service in the outer areas «•* Christchurch, involving an engin- < • ring survey of some magnitude. However, I will communicate with you :am .on the subject as soon as I am in a position to do so. In regard to the charge for calls from public call offices at Lyttelton, 1 can only repeat the information contained in my letter of February 8, that when the charges for calls from public tail offices at Sumner and certain other places on the outskirts of Christchurch were reduced to Id. reduction of the charge for calls from Lyttelton was also carefully considered. It was found, however, that this could not be done without my department incurrm 8 a considerable loss. In the circumstances it is regretted that the reddest for a reduction in the charge cannot be favourably considered at the present time.” Cr. Sargentina said the council should still hammer away at the Post and Telegraph Department. If it could make alterations to suit New Brighton and Sumner, why not for Lyttelton? Cr. sion had concluded and endeavour to arrange for a deputation to meet the Minister. He moved that a reply be sent to Mr McCombs stating that the council was not satisfied with the Minister’s reply and desired to meet the Minister. In seconding the motion, Cr, Hempstalk said the council should endeavour to get justice for Lyttelton. Cr. Foster said he would venture to say if the department gave a reduction in call charges a trial the increased business would result in increased revenue. Cr. Morris said the Mayor should go to Wellington and meet the Minister. There were other matters pertaining to the welfare of the town which the Mayor could also deal with while in Wellington. The motion was carried. British Sailors’ Society At the monthly meeting of the board of the British Sail .s’ Society, held in the Seamen’s Institute on Monday evening, the superintendent submitted the following report of the activities for the period April 27-May 24:—Officers and men visited institute 411. ships visited 10, books and parcels of papers distributed 34, letters received and posted 75. Two services were held, and one whist drive, and two visits were paid to the hospital. Grateful acknowledgment was made for the gifts of books, periodicals, and playing cards.
