Such notable events as the American Civil war and the Franco-Prussian war could be followed in New Zealand only at a considerable distance in time, even though steam vessels had speeded up travelling. Much of this news was culled from Australian newspapers, from which such items as “The destination of General Sherman’s army is unknown,” and “Alberta is evacuated and burnt,” were derived. On February 15, 1865, the latest London news, received via Adelaide, was dated December 4, 1864. By Way of India On October 10, 1870, when the Franco-Prussian war was raging, the latest news, received by way of India and Australia, was dated London,' September 6.
