ROWING
AVON CLUB ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT There tvas a very large attendance at the annual smoke concert of the Avon Rowing Club, held on Saturday night in the club rooms. Mr A. T. Evans, president of the club, was in the chair. In proposing the toast of the Avon Rowing Club, Mr Evans referred to the club’s history and to the progress that had been made during the last season. He wished the club every success in the future. The captain, Mr J. H. Lane, responded to the toast. Mr A. Mahoney, who proposed the toast of the Canterbury Rowing Association, said that it was essential that the various clubs in any sport should have a governing body. He spoke of the personal sacrifice made by the association members, in looking after the interests of the sport. The toast was responded to by Messrs F. D. Kesteven and R. J, Hobbs, who both said that although Avon had had a less satisfactory season than usual, there was no doubt that it would not be long before they regained their reputation of past years. The following other toasts were honoured during the evening:—“The King,” “Sister Clubs,” proposed by Mr B, R. Walker, and responded to by Messrs F. Booth, D. Gunn, R. J. Hobbs, and G. Stiles; “The Performers,” proposed by Mr A. T. Evans. Items were given by Mr Claude O’Hagan (songs), Messrs J. Denham, Havard, Kiddey, Collins, Harris, and Satterth waite. Thg prizes won during the season wc« presented by the club president.
