TECHNICAL DRAWS WITH REDCLIFFS EVEN PLAY IN SENIOR MATCHES All three senior games were fairly even on Saturday, although the standard of hockey was far below first-class. The game between Redcllffs and Technical at Lancaster Park, which ended in a 3-goal draw, was marred by far too many breaches. University played Its best game of the season to beat Selwyn in a fairly even match. Trinity was too good for Sydenham, winning by 3 goals to 1. The results give Trinity a lead of two points over Selwyn, with the other four teams level with a point and a half each. The following table shows the positions of the senior teams:— W. D. L. For. Agst. Pts. Trinity .. 4 0 0 14 1 4 Selwyn .. 2 0 2 9 10 2 Sydenham .. 1 1 2 9 9 H Technical .. 1 1 2 9 11 H Reddiffs .. 1 1 2 6 11 H University .. 1 1 2 5 10 li TRINITY V. SYDENHAM The game between Trinity and Sydenham was marked by different styles of play adopted by the members of the respective teams. The winners expounded tne push stroke to perfection, their positional play and quick flick shots completely paralysing the Sydenham defence. Sydenham, on the other hand, relied more on the "hit hard and run" style of play, which was useless against their opponents. The score of three goals to one is a fair indication of the trend of play. For the first 10 minutes play was in midfield. but Trinity soon got the upper hand, N. Bowden leading the forwards and centring for E. Radclitte to open the score. Shortly after a penalty corner gave the Lyttelton team another chance, with which P. McCormick was successful. Trinity 2, Sydenham 0. Two more penalty corners were successfully dealt with by Rhlnd, the Sydenham goal-keeper, who was playing an excellent game. Grafton, Clack, and Rusbridge combined in e promising Sydenham attack, which was stopped by Lester, but they soon returned and Barnhill was called on to stop a shot by Rusbridge. Clack collected off the rebound and registered Sydenham’s only goal. Trinity regained the lead when Loader sent D. McCormick and N. Bowden away, the latter centring to E. Radcliffe, who goaled easily. The half-time score was; Trinity 3, Sydenham 1. The second spell was evenly contested. Sydenham making strenuous efforts to reduce their handicap. Solid defence by Rogers, Loader, and Barnhill, however, kept Trinity’s goal intact and there was no score In the second spell. Trinity opened the second half with a quick attack, but were sent back by Connor, and play returned to Trinity’s circle, where Barnhill cleared in good style. The Sydenham forwards came again, but Lester intercepted and sent Radclifle and D. McCormick away, but "sticks” lost a certain goal. Sydenham again took the offensive, but found Rogers safe, and Loader transferred play to Sydenham’s territory, where Rhind effected clever saves on several occasions. McCormick and Bowden led a strong Trinity offensive, but the former missed the net. Sydenham made determined efforts in the closing stages and Grafton cleared the net with a lofty shot. The final score was; Trinity 3, Sydenham 1. The referees were Messrs C. C. Holland and P. Cornish. TECHNICAL v. REDCLIFFS The game between Redcllffs and Technical at Lancaster Park was spoilt by the frequent stoppages for breaches of the rules. Offside, obstructions, sticks, and striking at sticks were penalised frequently, to the detriment of the game. Technical was a weakened team through the absence of L. Silver and W. Cole, who were not available, and H. Le Page was absent from the Redcllffs half line. Redcllffs was one man short for the major portion of the first spell, as Hillsdon did not arrive till near half-time. Redcllffs opened the score a few minutes after the initial bully, when J. Burke netted from a penalty ■corner. Offside play lost several good chances for Technical, but finally Lohrey obtained possession at half-way to make a solo run to equalise with a prettv shot. Reddiffs 1, Technical 1. Technical came through almost immediately and Moir put them in the lead with a shot that beat the Redcllffs backs. Technical 2. Redcllffs 1. Technical had the better p£ the play for the rest of the spell although Redcllffs was handicapped through Hillsdon’s absence. Lohrey and Moir both missed the net for Technical, and half-time came with the score: Technical 2, Reddiffs 1. Technical forced the pace in the early stages of the second spell, and after losing several chances through infringements, Lohrey reached Reddiffs circle and passed to Moir, who increased the lead with a quick shot. Technical 3, Reddiffs 1. Thomson and the Burke brothers combined in a solid attack for Reddiffs. but the first-named lost a certain goal through an infringement. Reddiffs set up a series of determined onslaughts and gaining a penalty corner Thomson found the net. The seaside team held the game in Technical territory in the dosing stages and G. Burke equalised the scores just before the game ended. Final score: Technical 3, Reddiffs 3. Referees: Messrs E. Cummins and H. Teague. UNIVERSITY V. SELWYN With H. A. Barnett in the forward line, the University attack possessed a sting that has been noticeably absent in their former games. Their general play was an improvement, and they kept the Selwyn backs busy most of the game. A spell of even play followed the opening bully and for the first 10 minutes neither side could claim any advantage. University was the first to break through, and Bellamy cleared after a scramble in the goal-mouth. After a brief attack by the Selwyn forwards University was again in its opponents’ circle and several penalty corners were taken before Barnett succeeded in scoring after following in a shot by Huston. Barnett, Huston, and Duffield were combining well in the University forward line, but sound defence by Andrews and Johns kept them out. Watson sent the Selwyn forwards away, led by N. Burtt, whose shot was put aside by Hall. Half-time came with the score: University 1, Selwyn 0. Selwyn broke away early In the second half, and a penalty corner gave Hall a chance to effect a clever save. University rushed down to Selwyn’s end and a penalty corner gave Shlllito a chance which he turned to account. University 2, Selwyn 0. Selwyn gained the upper hand, but fine play by Shilllto and Walter kept their men out of the scoring area until N. Burtt and Cornish broke through for the latter to score. University 2. Selwyn 1. C. V. Walter was playing well and breaking up the Selwyn attacks In the early stages, and although Selwyn held the game in University’s end for a spell, no further score was registered, and the game ended with the score; University 2, Selwyn 1. Referees: Messrs C. Bellamy and R. Grade. LOWER GRADES Junior A Trinity 1, Sydenham 0. Selwyn 2, Technical 2. Junior B Kaiapoi 2, Selwyn 2. Sydenham 9. Technical 1.
