MR SPEAKER ENTERTAINED

GUEST OF PARLIAMENTARY PRESS GALLERY (PRESS association telegram.) WELLINGTON, May 5. The Hon. W. E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives, was entertained this evening by members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery. It was pointed out by the chairman (Mr C. G. Noble-Campbell) that Mr Speaker and the members of the gallery were related in a curious manner, in that both had to do their work without disclosing any political opinion. Mr Speaker, in reply, agreed with that view of the exceptional position of Parliamentary reporting, and said that, within the short period of his experience, members of tha gallery had done their work without any effort to disclose their political opinions. Mr Barnard assured the members of the gallery that so long as he held the position of Speaker he would maintain the traditions, privileges, and rights of the Press Gallery. It so happened that among the members of the Press Gallery was Sir James Hutchison, editor of the "Otago Daily Times," and opportunity was taken to congratulate him upon his knighthood. In reply, Sir James Hutchison said he regarded the honour conferred on him as a tribute to the profession of Journalism rather than to himself.
