LABOUR DAY GALA
ASSISTANCE OF SPORTS BODIES
ASHBURTON ADVANCEMENT ASSOCIATION'S REQUEST
A decision to invite sports bodies to meet the Ashburton Advancement Association to discuss whether the bodies would assist in the holding of the association's gala on Labour Day was made at the monthly meeting of the association last evening. Mr W. C. Osman presided. Previously the association had approached the Ashburton Sports Association, but the president of the association (Mr H. R. Biggar) had said that it was difficult to convene a meeting of the body, and that it would be better to approach individual sports bodies.
A public meeting would be held, probably in June, to consider the gala, said the chairman. The removal of the gum trees in Walnut avenue because of their interference with power lines and their replacement with young trees was discussed, and the meeting decided that Mr W. Thomas enquire about the replacement of the trees and report to the next meeting of the executive. Opposition to a policy of planting trees and in a few years later removing them was expressed by Mr F. K. Cooper, who thought it would be just as well to leave the trees as they were. The chairman explained that the trees would not be removed this year, but that they would be taken out when they became too big. If the trees were topped year after year they would become a disgrace, .said Mr W. J. Welsh.
A suggestion that the association arrange for an expert to do pruning work for the association in Ashburton. which the public would be invited to watch, was made by Mr H. R. C. McElrea.
Mr Cooper gave notice of his intention to move p motion that the Borough Council *oe asked to take over the maintenance of the plots at present cared for by the association. As a mark of respect to Mr J. S. Crooks, a brother of Mr T. Crooks, who was a member of the association, and to Mr J. Watson, the first secretary of the association, members of the association stood in silence. It was decided to thank Mr P. M. Dunlop for his gift of bulbs.
