AKAROA
The president, Miss E. Le Laevre, presided over a good attendance of members of the Akaroa Women s Institute, at the monthly general meeting. , x - Two new members were elected. The president reported haying attended the annual meeting . of the North Canterbury Federation in Christchurch. The federation decided to assist the fund for bringing Mrs Alfred Watt, of Canada, one of the first promoters of the Women's Institute Movement, to New Zealand next month. The president congratulated Mrs H. i Nelson Wright ar#l Miss E. Jacobson , (re-elected) upon their election to the ( executive committee of the North Canterbury Federation. A letter was received from the Jubilee Institute for the Blind thanking the institute and Miss I. Mahon for assistance in the sale of their goods. Mrs O. A. group convener, wrote asking for suggestions for the classes for institute members at the Duvauchelle Show. The following classes were suggested:— Flower classes, for institute members only, i.e., best specimen rose, three pansies, three sweet peas, Christmas cake, child's knitted garment. Mesdames J. E. Armstrong and C, Petterson were appointed to take charge of the dance programme at the birthday party next month. It was decided that the presidents and honorary secretaries of all Peninsula institutes and women's divisions be sent complimentary tickets. Mrs W. B. Ramsay was appointed convener of the decorations committee to decorate the Oddfellows' Hall for the party. After discussion it was decided to hold the next meeting on Tuesday, June 9, the competitions to be best bloom, and sultana cake. It was decided that during the winter months the meetings begin at 2.15 p.m. An interesting address was given by Miss Le Lievre on flowers. The president presented Mrs A. M. Moore, a member of the institute, who is leaving Hickory, Akaroa, to live in the EUesmere district, with a bouquet, and expressed the members' regret at her departure. The following were the results of the competitions:Best bloom, Mesdames C. Petterson and G. M. Kearney (equal) 1, Mrs G. A. Hammond 3; darning sock, Mrs W. H. Moore 1, Mrs C. Petterson 2. Mesdames C. W. Leete, H. J. Moore, J. E. Armstrong, and D. Narbey were the hostesses for the afternoon.
MOUNT PLEASANT
The monthly meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women's Institute was held at "Stonycroft," with Mrs Woodford presiding. It was reported that the current years' programmes had been distributed and that some interesting talks and demonstrations were scheduled. Members had paid an enjoyable visit to the factory of Ernest Adams, Ltd., last month. Mrs Peters was appointed to take charge of competitions at meetings, and Mrs Lawry agreed to arrange a programme for the birthday party to be held in June. It was reported that the play-reading circle was meeting with success. Members agreed to send a delegate to the annual conference to be held in July. Mrs Bowbyes, representing the Home Economics Association, gave a demonstration on the making of baskets, trays, etc.. and many members availed themselves of the opportunity to start work under her instruction. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Turland, Hughes, Gale, Ross, and Smith. ■■» »
