CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL TWO RECORDS BROKEN The annual junior and senior crosscountry handicaps and championships for the boys of the Ashburton High School were held over a four-nnle course yesterday afternoon. The feature of the race was the running of R. Ken ward (senior) and D. Shaw (junior), both of whom broke records. Kenward, who reduced the record last year by 46sec, lowered his time this year by a further 34sec. Shaw’s time was Imin 51sec better than Jackson’s record of last year. There were 45 starters in the senior race, and 46 in the junior race. The race was run off under the supervision of Mr E. J. Wood. The house cross-country will be held next week. (26min 27sec) 3. HINDS HOCKEY CLUB SUCCESSFUL YEAR DISCLOSED The Hinds Ladies’ Hockey Club held its annual meeting in the Domain ■Buildings on Wednesday, with Miss Joyce Watson presiding. The annual report said that the senior and junior teams had a successful season, winning both grades in the county .competitions. Senior and junior teams had been entered in the Methven, Ashburton, Geraldine, and Timaru six-a-side tournaments. Misses J. Watson, J. Lowe, R. Donaldson, J. Davison, M. Watson, and F. Donaldson were selected in the Ashburton team, which played in the Dominion tournament at Gisborne. The club was well represented in the representative teams which played against Canterbury, Ellesmere, South Canterbury, and Oamaru. The balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £l6 8s 4d, was read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows; —President, Mrs J. R. Mcßae; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. T. Lowe, R. Reith, S. Watson, W. Davison, Wilson Lowe, • Messrs T. Wells, W. Henderson, E. W. M. Watson, H, Donaldson, Rev.- Mr Walsh, and Mr C, King; secretary and treasurer, Miss Molly Lowe; committee, all senior 'players and captain of junior team; coach, Mrs S. Hampton; auditor, Mr S. Watson; delegates, Miss Molly Lowe and Mrs S. Hampton. Opening day was fixed for April 22, when the club will play the bagkstball team in hockey and baskefbajfe/: ffi was decided' to’ hold - practices nesdays, beginning at 2.30 pirn. ' A challenge for a game to-morrow was received from the Lowcliffe Club, but as the dat& was unsuitable it was decided to play on May 2. It was also decided to ask the Domain Board if a hockey grpund could be formed Oft the domain. An opening ball Will be held on April 30.
