BURKES PASS BRIDGE
+ — •_ REPLY FROM MACKENZIE COUNTY AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION DISSATISFIED Some concern at the tone and contents of a letter from Mr D. Jeune, clerk of the Mackenzie County, was expressed by members of the Automobile Association (South Canterbury) at an executive meeting last f.vening. The association had written asking what the county wgs prepared to do about an unsafe road bridge near Burkes Pass. The county clerk replied: “We have this bridge under review for replacing. If the Main Highways Board takes over the highways we are not going to build the bridge for them. Meanwhile I will try to have temporary repairs done.” “That is a very flippant reply,” said Mr J. M. C. McLeod. “If we cannot get a better reply than that we should go to the chairman of the county.” Members urged that if the bridge was unsafe, it was the duty of the coiinty to have it repaired. It was decided to write to the Mackenzie County Council asking for further information. Fifty-two new members were elected. Mr Pr.lliser protested against the methods of the borough council trucks collecting refuse saying that the trucks travelling on the wrong side of the road were a danger to the public. Motorists were not allowed to travel on the wrong side of the road. He moved that a letter be sent to the borough council. The motion was carried. Those present were: Messrs S. G. McClelland (chairman), W. Kidd. J. M. C. McLeod, J. Palliser, A. K Watkins. A. S. Aitken, R. Wilson, and W. J. Fcote.
