RIFLE SHOOTING

SNOW SHIELD ANNUAL CADET CONTEST TO BE HELD TO-DAY To bring the contest into closer touch with the demands of modern warfare the conditions of .the annual competition between teams of cadets from Christ’s College and the Christchurch Boys’ High School for the Snow Cadet Challenge Shield have been altered, and in the contest which will be held at Redcliffs to-day, there will be no marching, as in past years. The contest will begin at the Redcliffs rifle range at 2.15 p.m. The shield has been won by Christ’s College for several years past. The teams have also been made smaller, and each school will be represented by a team composed of an under-officer two non-commissioned officers, and two sections of six men each, one with rifles and the other with light automatics. The reason for the deletion of the march to the range is that with mechanised warfare soldiers would be carried in. lorries more often than they would have to march. The targets, each of six iron falling plates a team, will be pointed out to the teams at a distance of not less than 800 yards. The teams will be formed up on the starting lines, and will advance to the first firing mound, of which there will be four, and begin to shoot. Principles of fire and movement and range discipline will be looked for in the awarding of points. Each man will have 20 rounds, to be fired at the four ranges. For the inspection, including the turn-out and drill, 40 marks are allocated, three marks are allowed for each plate shot down, making a possible of 72 for this section, and half a mark is given for each round returned, if all plates are down. Forty marks are allotted for range discipline, including all orders, making a grand total of 152 points, plus points that may be gained by the return of ammunition. The chief umpire will be Captain K. J. Walker, and the other umpires will be Captain S. M. Sattcrthwaite, Lieutenant F. L. Davis, and Lieutenant J. Vincent.
