PRIVATE DANCE

GUESTS AT RICJARTQN HOUSE Nearly a century ago two young Scots left their home at Kirkstyle, Riccarton, Ayrshire, and set out for the then little-known land of New Zealand. After visiting Wellington and Nelson, they came to Port Cooper, now called Lyttelton, and decided to settle on the banks of the Avon. That was in 1843, and those intrepid pioneers were Messrs John and William, Deans, who were for some years the only Europeans living on the Canterbury plains.. A few years later, Mr William Deans was drowned at sea, but Mr John "Deans continued to live at Riccarton, to cultivate the land, to plant trees, and to entertain new arrivals, and his descendants have since been identified with the province, through three generations of useful service. : Last night, at Riccarton House, which stands on the historic spot where their forebears first settled, three members of the fourth generation, great-grandsons of Mr John Deahs, were the guests of honour at a very enjoyable dance given by their grandmother, Mrs Deans. Friends from all parts of Canterbury were present at the dance, which was an outstanding success. The guests of honour were Mr Robin Deans, son of Mr and Mrs James Deans, Homebush, who celebrated his twenty-first birthday on Sunday; Mr John Deans, son of Mr and Mrs John Deans, Kirkstyle; and Mr Austen Deans, elder son of Mrs Alister Deans. Morven. They will both come of age this year. The drawing-room was used for dancing, music being played by Fritz Seymour's orchestra. Supper was served in the dining-room, gay with bowls of mixed flowers, and the sitting rooms and wide, closed-in verandahs, decorated with dahlias and autumn foliage, were used as lounges. Mrs Deans wore a beautiful trained gown of wine-red panne velvet, trimmed with vellum-tinted Carrickmacross lace, and her scarf was of l delicate Honiton lace.

Mrs John Deans wore a frock of larkspur blue lace. Mrs James Deans, parchment lace frock, with an effective spray of brown, orange, and russet flowers and leaves on the bodice. Mrs William Deans, deep wineberry red satin, with diamente clasp at the neckline.

Mrs Alister Deans, violet delustred crepe, cut on Grecian lines, with graceful angel-sleeves. Mrs Douglas Deans, attractive frock of chiffon, shading from pale primrose at the neckline to deep orange at the hem, and finished with an orange sash and orange flower on the front of the bodice.

Mrs S. M. Deans wore a frock of apple-green satin, with cape to match.

BUFFET DINNER Mrs George Aitken was hostess last evening at a very cheery buffet dinner party given at her home, "Thornton," Fendalton, before the large dance given by Mrs Deans at Riccarton House. Mrs Aitken wore a beautiful trained frock of soft pink craquelle, trimmed with flowers of the material. Her guests were Mr and Mrs J. W. Woodhouse, Mrs Alister Deans, Mr and Mrs Frank Wilding, Mr and Mrs Llyn Lawrence. SUNSHINE AT ADDINGTON

The Metropolitan Trotting Club's good luck held yesterday, when its very successful Easter meeting was concluded at Addington in perfect weather, and crowds of well-dressed women sat in the stands or strolled on the lawns enjoying the warmth of the sunshine and the music of the band and giving attention, intermittently, to the horses and the racing. Honoured guests at luncheon with Mr Frank Graham, vice-president of the club, and Mrs Graham, were the Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, Mr and Mrs J. R. McKenzie, Mrs S. W. Mrs ActonAdams wore a silk crepe frock, patterned in emerald green, blue, red, and pink in floral design; Mrs Fell wore a black taffeta frock trimmed with sequins. To afford a number of her former schoolmates and other young friends an opportunity of saying good-bye to Miss Relda Duncan who, with her parents, will leave to-night on a visit to Britain, Mrs G. COIN PARTY Misses J. and E. Bush were hostesses at a coin party held at their home at Hornby to assist the sweets stall at the St. Columbus Church. The time was spent in dancing, competitions, games, and community singing. Music for dancing was played by Mrs and Miss J. Bush. Competitions were won by Misses G. Teape, M Ackerley, M. Clements, and I. Crawford, Messrs R. Monk and H. Kissel. A Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss M. Leith and Mr W. Miller. , ,„. Items were given by Mrs Bush, Miss. J. Bush, and Mr R. Kilburn.
