THE QUEEN’S GRANDMOTHER Perhaps it is not generally known that Queen Mary is a quarter Hungarian by descent, and is very proud of the fact. Her grandfather, Prince Alexander of Wurtemberg, fell in love with an Hungarian girl, the Countess Claudine Rhedey, at a ball in Vienna. He married her morganatically on May 2, 1835. A fortnight later they were created Count and Countess of Hohenstein, as an Austrian title. The countess was killed at a military review in 1841, when her horse bolted and carried her among charging cavalry. Her son, Francis, was created Prince of Teck, a Wurtemberg title, in 1863. He was made Duke of Teck in 1871, five years after he married Princess Mary of Cambridge. Claudine is one of Queen Mary's Christian names. Some years ago Queen Mary erected a memorial to her paternal grandmother in Hungary. Those memories were recalled in Budapest when King Edward VIII. visited it last year. Y.M.C.A.
