GIFT FROM , CLUB AT RANGIORA

Mr F. Smith, who has been associated!; with' the North. Canterbury Football Club for 13 years, was met by rnembers of the club at his- home at &oburn' oh Saturday evening- and presented with a gift of silverware in view of his recent marriage. The president (Mr L. I. ! Hawkins) made the presentation, and.referred, to Mr Smith's work as a member of the club's committee and to his selection as a representative player for the province. As well as having' been a member of the Canterbury B team last season, Mr Smith played in the country team and in the Northern and North Canterbury representative teams. Unemployed Registrations

Four men registered "as unemployed in the Rangiora district last week. Two will receive sustenance payments, and one will work on the Ashley river protective scheme. One case was held over for investigation. Two applications received by the Rangiora Unemployment Committee for assistance on the applicants' own farms are being investigated.

Gifts to Methodist Church

Gifts of six copies of the new Methodist hymn book from Mr and Mrs J. A. Shaw and of six from Mr and Mrs J. McGiffert were acknowledged by the Rev. T. Coatsworth at the evening 'service at the Rangiora Methodist Church on Sunday. Presbyterian Church

About £SO was given by members of the John Knox Presbyterian Church at the harvest festival services on Sunday, when a special thanksgiving offering was taken up to liquidate an overdraft.

Relief Workers' Picnic

Nearly 120 relief workers, their wives arid children attended a picnic to Diamond Harbour on Saturday. Passengers by the train from Rangiora numbered 76 adults and 43 children.

North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union Teams in the North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union's competitions were graded as follows at the sub-union meeting in Rangiora last evening:— Senior: Glenmark, Kowai, Cust, North Canterbury, Oxford, Tuahiwi. Junior open: Amberley, Ohoka, Woodend, Loburn, North Canterbury, Cust. Under 19: North Canterbury, Rangiora High School, Glenmark-Amberley, Oxford, Woodend. Under 17: Kowai-Woodend, North Canterbury, Loburn, Rangiora High School, Oxford. The president, Mr G. M.. Sheldon, presided over a good attendance. Messrs G. C. Beattie, C. Robb (i and D. "Grant were appointed a committee to grade players in the ' Under 19 and under .17 grades. Sole selectors were appointed as follows for each of the three lower grades:—Junior, open, Mr G- Young; under 19, Mr Beattie; under 1.7, Mr A. L. Lockhart. >The proposed- regulations. for the insurance scheme were approved, and it was pointed out that lodge members were not excluded from benefits under the scheme. Messrs Beattie, L. I. Hawkins, and C. W. Tyler were elected an insurance committee.

Regent Theatre

"The Farmer Takes a Wife," a story of simple people, will be presented this afternoon, and evening at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora. There is a splendid cast, beaded \>y Janet G&ynor, Henry Fonda, Jane Withers, and Slim Summerville. This story of a young man who wants to earn enough money to buy his own farm, is a splendid tribute to the "sons of the soil." On Thursday evening London's latest musical comedy success, "Mr Cinders," will be presented. The popular English comedian, Clifford Mollison, and Zelma O'Neal are the stars. HANMER SPRINGS PROGRESS LEAGUE

A meeting of the Hanmer Springs Progress League was held, with Mr D. L. Rutherford presiding. The Minister for Health and Tourist Resorts (the Hon. I?. Langstone) wrote advising that he would visit Hanmer at the end of the present session. A discussion on the electric light and water supply* was followed by the decision to send a deputation to Wellington. The Canterbury Progress League and the Amuri County Council are to be asked to Support the delegation in its efforts to secure improved water and electric light services. The untidiness of the streets, footpaths, and water tables was mentioned, and it was decided to endeavour to get the Amuri County Council to attend to these matters. A gold button has been given by the club for • weeklycompetition for the best score off the rifle. At the end of the season the button will go to the best grand aggregate with handicap.

At the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association's .annual showon Thursday, Mr • Lancelot Watson will complete 25 years' service as secretary of the association; Mr Watson went to Oxford in 1910 as headmaster of the primary school,- and during his residence in tti? township has been connected with many organisations in the district. His chief interest, however, has been the agricultural show,

and the popularity of this annual fixture is due in no small measure to his work. Mr Watson has encountered periods of success and of difficulty, but he has used his organising ability to good effect year by year until the Oxford show has come to be regarded as one of the best country shows in North Canterbury. Under his direction the smallest details receive careful thought, and one of the pleasing features of the exhibitions is the considerate attention accorded visitors.

CRICKET AT SHEFFIELD

Playing the final match in the Malvern Cricket Association's competition for the Robinson Cup the Greendale B team met the Sheffield B team on the Sheffield Domain on Saturday afternoon. The results of the first innings are as follows: Greendale 151, Sheffield 46. The match will be continued on Saturday. Harvest Thanksgiving The annual harvest thanksgiving service of the Sheffield Presbyterian Church was held on Sunday morning. A large congregation was present and the Rev. L. W. Rothwell conducted the service. The church was decorated with produce and flowers. Appropriate hymns were sung, Miss Molly Bates playing the organ. A sale will be held to dispose of the produce

A dance and card evening was held in the public hall on Saturday evening under the auspices of the Lincoln Swimming Club.' There was a very good attendance, and White's orchestra played for the dancing. Mr W. Jordan was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr K. Cameron and partner, and euchre prizes by Mrs C. Moody 1, Mrs B. Moran 2. Men, Mr G. Norquay 1, Mr M. Moody 2.

' GARDEN PARTY AT HALSWELL

A successful garden party and sale of work was held in the vicarage grounds last week. The proceeds were to help the funds of St. Mary's Church. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P. for the district opened the function, and expressed great satisfaction at seeing such a large gathering present. The following were the stallholders:—Cakes, Mesdames F. A. and H. Sparkes and Mrs Copping; produce, Mr and Mrs F. Kolkman and Mrs W. Roselor; books. Mesdames Atkinson and Buncomb; work, Mesdames J. Templeton, Brightwell, M. Smith, and M. Noble; sweets, Mrs T. Wright, Misses Copping and Ridder; chocolate wheel, Messrs N. Gardiner and M. Smith; afternoon tea, Mrs $i Hayes and. helpers; hidden treasure, Mr W. Copping; weight guessing, Messrs F. Sparkes and S. Hayes; ice cream,. Miss M. Cox. Bring-and-Buy Social '-■ A bring-and-buy basket social. was held in the hall by St. Mary's ladies' guild, when there was an excellent attendance. .The object of the evening was to help the funds to build a parish room for Sunday school and meetings for the church. Party and Dance There was ari excellent attendance at the card party and dance held oh Saturday night under the management of the Hall Committee. Competitions at the cards were won by Mesdames J. Wilson and H. Hayes, Messrs HV Wood and S. Hayes. The aggregate for the season was won by Mrs A. Sparkes and Mr H. Sparkes. In the dance hall a luckyrspot waltz was won by Mrs O'Grady and Mr Bonis. Miss Wicks and Mr Bonis were the winners of the lucky-spot Boston. Miss E. Rogers and Mr Cockle were the successful competitors in the lucky-spot waltz. Music for the evening was played by Colin Smart's orchestra. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs F, R. Wilhelm and F. Chapman.

WADDINGTON

There was a large congregation at the Waddingtoh. Methodist Church on Sunday morning, when the harvest festival celebration was held. The church was tastefully .decorated .and there was a fine display of produce. The service was taken by the Rev. W. L. Long, and Miss A. Howarth was the organist. A sale of produce will be held this afternoon.

TARSEALING WORK AT KAIKOURA

TENDER FOR £779 ACCEPTED A special meeting of the Kaikoura County Council was held on Saturday, to consider tenders for tar-sealing, and the tender of Mr Thos. Pheloung (Christchurch) at 5Jd a square yard, total price £779, was accepted. The work consists of 25,212 square yards on the Main Highway, from Lyell creek bridge to Staples corner, including lead-ins from other roads, and also 8820 square .yards in" the East end of the Kai\toura tovitvsVvvp, extending down to Parson's corner, toward the new wharf.

Social for Mr and Mrs F. H. Flower Mr and Mrs F. H. Flower and family, who are leaving the Kaikoura. district to reside in Hanmer Springs, were the guests of honour at a gathering in the Mayfair Theatre. There was a large attendance of people from all parts of the district.

Mr F. J. Monk, in expressing the regret of those present at the guests' departure, after their association with the district over a very long period, presented Mr Flower with an easy chair; Mrs Flower with an oil painting. Mrs R. Johnston with a Doulton dinner service, Mr Eric Flower with art oak writing desk, and Mr R. F. Flower with a golf-bag. Other speakers were. Messrs E. A. W. Smith, G. E. Parsons, Dr. R. L. Withers, Messrs S. O'Callaghan, J. McL. Reid, J. Davison> and the Rev. F. Robertson. Mrs R. Johnston contributed two solos, accompanied by Miss Eva Mackle.

Cycle Road Race

The fourth and final road race held by the Kaikoura Cyoling and Athletic Association for the cup presented by Collins Bros., was held on Saturday evening. Results: P. Keehan (2min) 1, F. Mclnnes (2min) 2, R. Howard (2 mih) 3, Leo Smith (2min) 4, C. Wareham (scr) 5. Time 45min Bsec. Fastest time was secured by C. Wareham (scr), his time being 42min 38sea The winner of the cup was P. Card Tournament

The fire brigade is holding a series of eight evenings in aid of the general fuhds of the brigade. At the first evening the winners were Mrs S. Cormack and Mr E. Monk. Consolation prizes were won by Mesdames J. Monk and T. Lane, and Mr E. Dalzfell. The brigade is giving an aggregate prize for the best five scores out of the eight evenings, and also a consolation aggregate.

Miniature Rifle Shooting

The official opening of the Kaikoura Miniature Rifle Club was held on Saturday evening. The season was declared open by Mr H. Hay ward (president), who fired the first round.

Valedictory

A pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mr J. Barrett, Puhi Puhi, when residents of the- valley g-atbered to bid good-bye to Miss Gwen Burrows (England), and Miss Rhoda Raymond (Sydney), who have been staying with Mrs C. Biunel. The cards were won by Mrs J. Rainey and Mr Joe Smith ana Mr Stan. Jones and Miss D. Tait won the consolation prizes. GameSj competitions, and dancing were enjoyed. Cricket A team from the Kaikoura Club visited Parnassus on Sunday to play a return match with Parnassus. Kaikoura, batting first, made a total of 125 runs (Barker 21, Hobbs 15., Blunt 23, Grant 33). The match was abandoned because of the weather. Tennis A representative team of men and women players from the Marlborough Association visited Kaikoura on Saturday and played a series of games against Kajkoura. Fine weather was experienced and some good games were enjoyed. Brass Band A programme of music was played at the ; Kaikoura. Hospital on Sunday •afternoon by. the Kaikoura Brass Band, and was greatly enjoyed by the patients and.staff., —'.-.,. The band then visited the residence of Mr P. Flbiyer, who has been patron for a number. of years, and Mrs AX Robinson (president), in making a presentation to Mr Flower, expressed the members' regret at his departure from the district,'
