MEMBERSHIP RETURNS RECEIVED

MEETING OF RETURNED SOLDIERS’ EXECUTIVE Tiie figures on the financial membership ladder for returned soldiers’ associations throughout the Dominion, which were received by the Christchurch executive at its meeting last evening, showed the last returns for the main centres as follows:—Auckland, 3035; Dunedin, 2466; Christchurch, 2329; Wellington, 1213. The North Island had 65 associations with 15,044 members, and the South Island 19 associations with 8648 members, making a total of 84 associations, with 23,692 members. The employment officer’s report for the fortnight ending March 28 showed that registrations totalled 487, including 64 for New Brighton and 14 new registrations, a decrease of 25 on the number for the previous period. Work subsidised totalled 236 days foi* 202 men at a cost of £97 12s Bcl, as compared with 2563 days for 217 men at a cost of £96 19s 7d for the previous period. This included: Domains, 72 days (64 for previous period); club, 10 days (eight for previous period); New Brighton, 18 days (18 for previous period). Work found without subsidy totalled 71* days, as against 67 for the previous period. The report of the general assistance committee for the same period stated that there had been 95 applications, as compared with 89 for the previous period. Applications granted were: Groceries. 54; coal, 20; miscellaneous, 12. Three applications were declined and three deferred. Arrangements for the sale of Anzac commemoration stamps from April 27 till June 20 were discussed. A circular was received from headquarters recommending the formation of a citizens’ committee in each centre, and It was left to an emergency committee to take further action. It was decided to enter two teams In the Canterbury inter-club billiards tournament.
