NOTES ON THE RACING

An Exciting Finish - All th e acceptors went to the post for the Trial Handicap and after a straggling start the race developed into a keen with a very' exciting finish. St. Helena was first away from the barrier and was closely attended by Treasure Trove, Hu&tiie Wrack, Kaxoro, and Bill Grattan, while Elite Eey, Chateau, ahd Minnietonka were slow . P°, ve - In the final round the held closed up and with two furlongs go St; Helena had a short lead from Treasure Trove, Bill Grattan, Elite Hey. and Hughie Wrack. Bill Grattan and Elite Ray challenged St.' Helena, and m a most exciting finish, * St. Helena, BUI Grattan, and Elite Key passed the post almost in line. Chateau. Hughie Wrack, and Treasure Trove .finished after the placed horses. St, Helena Is only four years old and she had previously raced well at Wellington. By Wrack from Bonilene she has breeding to recommend her and with experience is bound to improve. Bill Grattan lost ground in the garly stages, but finished well and it seemed that Elite Rey was unlucky to be beaten. The best of the unplaced division appeared to be Chateau and ‘iunny Jack. Enhoppled Trotters The Domett Handicap provided another vcjry exciting contest and/ u good exhibition of trotting by the back-marker, Carl, who was ■ narrowly defeated. Highrate broke up at the start and lost ground, and the early leader was Mocrangl with Harvest Lady, Beethoven, and Isis following in that order. Very soon Harvest Lady took commaiisl. while Highrate and Carl made up ground. In the straight a great tussle was seen and Carl, after a good effort, caught Harvest Lady, but just failed to overtake Highrate. Isis and Beethoven followed the placed horses. The winner was making his first appearance in W. J. Doyle’s colours, and gave a pleasing display. He will, still further improve. Hidden Charm Shows Stamina The Cheviot Cup attracted a useful field and Hidden Charm won on his merits after leading over the last three furlongs. Vagabond King at once rushed to the front, with Hidden Charm as his nearest *attenciaht, followed by Oversight, Cadiz. Marie Louise, and Monty Cnimts. When the last round was started the order was practically the same, but the field had bunched up,. Vagabond King still showing the way to Hidden Charm. The latter assumed the lead three furlongs from home and thougn he had to be kept up to his work, no had a lead of two lengths as the post was reached. Cadiz, With a belated effort, got up to defeat Oversight in the last tew strides. King’s Guard and Vagabond King followed the placed horses. Hidden Charm fairly outstayed the 'rest of the field and is gifted with more than usual stamina. Cadiz ran another solid race and Oversight was always handily placed. King’s Guard trotted very last over the last mile, but Mystery Yet had had enough before the final stages were reached, A Double Winner Penalised 12 yards for her earlier win, St. Helena easily won the Mina Handicap with Treasure Trove apd Becky Direct in the minor places. Treasure Trove was cpiickest to begin, and soon had a good lead from Effle Parrish, War Bride, and Major Guy. With a round to go St. Helena was handy to the leaders, and three furlongs from hom,e she joined Treasure Trove and the pair soon put a break on the others. St. Helena won comfortnb’y. while following were Treasure Trove, Becky Direct, Royal Grattan, and Major Guy. The winner’s exhibition was a good one, and she will win more races ove’r short distances. Treasure Trove found the journey quite far enough, but the performances of Becky Direct and Royal Grattan gave promise of better things to come. Eftle Parrish also went well until the final stages, cat which stage War Bride ..also faded out.

The Favourite Beaten

A very warm favourite in Roval Don Ron suffered defgat in tl\e Sjoiswood Handicap, the winner turning up in the little-fancied Bandit. '

Elite Key showed the way to Monetary in the early stages, but, the latter broke and Royal Douiton, followed by Bandit, closed on Elite Rey. who broke later on. Two furlongs from home. Bandit drew level with Royal Douiton and the pair came into the straight together. There was a short, sharp tussle, but Bandit was always going the better of the pair and he won very decisively by a couple of lengths. The winner is only three years old, and by Brigand from Lauder Chimes, he has done very little rcaing. In this race he held on tenaciously and fairly worried the favourite out °£ first money. Royal Douiton, who cost her owner 480 guineas a few weeks ago. lost much of the big reputation she had rightly or wrongly earned, for 1 she was decisively beaten. The other pair made no showing in the later stages.

Improved Time

In winning the Bollard Memorial Handicap. Southern Smile gave a good display of pacing and from a 2min £3sec mark he registered 2min 14 2-5. Pauline Dillon went awav very smartly and soon led from Boltaire, Hermes.

■Wheat Pool, and Sky Wink. _ v/itn half the journey covered, Pauline Dillon retired, leaving Boltaire in front, while Southern Smile improved her position. She had the race well in hand a quarter of a mile from heme, and was not troubled in the run to the uost. to defeat Sky Wink, who came Cast to deprive Boltaire of second place. The winner is owned by the southern sportsman, Mr G. Aitcheson, who was present to see the race. She is a marc above the average. Sky Wink finished solid#, but while Boltaire had every chance he did not put much dash into his work towards the finish.

An Outsider

Packers were ail astray in their calculations for the Parnassus Handicap for the winner turned up in Moarangi. who led all the way and returned a dividend of more than quarter oi a at once took the lead from Sagamore, but the latter broke and San Michele drew up to the lender. This pair made most of the running and when San Michele became tired Hit; irate was on level terms with Moerangi. A break put the latter out of court, and Moerangi went on to score a comfortable victory. The held was not a ‘•lrons one, and Moerangi was the only one to go the distance without a misHke Highrale broke twice on the journey, but San Michele went better than he did earlier in the day.

\ Good Performance

On Parade was responsible for a good performance in the Mackenzie Handicap for after losing ground at the spirt he raced into a good position and over the dual stages he was not seriousiv troubled. Carrageen and On Parade were slow to move and Sunny Jack soon took up the running from Boltaire, Wheat Pool, ond Sky Wink. When half the distance had been covered On Parade was m handy position behind Sunny Jack and Boltaire. with Glonetta and Sky While most prominent of the otheis. Suniiv Jack was the first to enter the ■try but he broke, and On Paiadtfinishing well, stalled o.f a challeng'd nnismiiß t win , n impressive slvll while Glonetta finished fast m third place ahead of Sky Wink The winner is a good stamp of pacer , rp.-Ti/is Axworthy and has»only been by TiaviS Axwor He finished samefy and may win in still better fomoany Boltaire ran. another conGcS race, but Sunny Jack disappointed by going to a break when serious racing commenced.

At the Birch wood Hunt meeting on Saturday, R. Beale received a broken collar-bone when his mount, Panocha, tell with him in the Turi -Steeplechase.

ROSEHILL MEETING LOKiSI NEAGH WINS R.AWSON STAKES (UiUTED I'KESs 4.S3oi;Ul'iqN— CortßlOßT.) (Received March 29, U. 30 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 29. Lough Neagh, revealing all his old dash and pace, downed the stars in the Rawgon Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday, Peter Pan. although close enough to defeat Lough Neagn a furlong from home, was beaten by u neck. It Is contended that Peter Pan is not the horse he was. He completely tailed to reproduce his devastating run in the straight. Lough Neagh® was as sprightly after, as before, the race. Sylvandale was a disappointment. He was going well in the early part of tj>e race, but finish poorly. Garrlo got a bad passage, his rider, Voltre, attempting more than once to push him through on the rails and receiving several checks. Spear Prince created a good impression by lending the field to the straight. Gay Blonde won the Railway Handicap, Impressively, smothering the opposition at the turn and stalling off a determined challenge by Barak. Regular Bachelor's third with 9-13 indicated all is well with him. Red Rosebud, although she won the Three-year-old Handicap by only half a neck, met stiff opposition.
