CHRISTCHURCH MARKET FIRMER BANK ISSUES MOVE UP

There was fair business on the Christchurch Stock Exchange on Saturday morning, when a number of stocks moved upward. Banking shares secured a good deal of attention, and the section showed firmness.

Christchurch Gas were quoted 31s 6d buyers, 35s Gd sellers. Buyers of, Timaru Brewery shares raised their bids to 13s od, sellers at 16s 6d. Tooths Brewery shares were firmer on buyers’ oners 51s 6d. An odd parcel of Beath and Company shares. cum dividend, changed hands at 275, market closing 26s 9d buyers. 27s 6d sellers. Buyers of Broken Hill Proprietary raised their bids to 59s 6d, sellers at 60s. Consolidated Brick were firm at 10s, but closed easier with sellers at 9s lid, buyers at 9s 7d. Dominion Fertilisers were steady at 25s 4d. Electrolytic Zinc, preference, were firmer witn buyers and business at 40s 3d. sellers at 40s 6d. G. J. Coles recovered to dealings at 71s 3d and 71* 6d, and these were buyers’ and sellers’ closing quotations respectively.

Mining Mount Lyells were firm at 23s 9d and 23s lOd, closing quotations 23s 8d buyers. 23s lOd sellers. Maori Gully were fractionally weaker with business at IOAd, and further unsupported sellers at lid. Unlisted Stocks

LONDON HIDES MARKET

A. H. Turnbull and Company report that they have received the following cablegram from London dated March 27:

Danish butter 116s; New Zealand finest 84s; Kangaroo 84s. New Zealand cheese, white 51s, coloured 525; Canadian 635. Both markets are firm.

H. C. Smith, of the City Market, reports a very large entry of poultry at the sales on Wednesday and Friday. There was a fine display of heavy breed cockerels, principally Black Orpington and Sussex, and a good steady sale to the end of the large entry. Ducks were penned in extia large numbers. Prices xor these are disappointing. The quality of the pullets was much better; also the entry of hens. Prices were as follows; —Cockerels, small 2s 3d to 5s 9d; good quality lines 6s 3d to 9s; pullets 5s 6d to 9s 9d; hens Is 9d to 7s; ducks and ducklings ,2s 6d to 6s 6d. A pen of breeding Khaki'Bs 3d, and odd birds for breeding to 7s 6d each; eggs Is 2d to Is 3d.

BIG RIVER REPORT The report for the week ending March 25 states;— Repairs to main shaft and No. 4 chamber—Repairs to the chamber have been completed satisfactorily. The guides have been put in both shaft compartments and the ladders put in place in the travelling way. Several wall plates in the shaft at 45 feet below No. 4 level have bulged in slightly. These are being put back into position, before leaving this section. This work is now under way. No. 2 adit level —Repair work to this level is in progress, sets of timber being replaced and reinforced where necessary. Battery dam —Advantage is being taken of the present spell of fine weather to carry out essential repairs to this dam, and these repairs are now in progress. MOSSY CREEK RETURN
