SLIP IN OTIRA GORGE

ROAD PROBABLY BLOCKED ALL TO-DAY

A big landslide has blocked the West Coast road between Arthur’s Pass and Otir,?. on the West Coastside of the top of the pass. The road has been blocked for about a chain, and as the repair gangs will not arrive until this morning it is thought that the road will be impassable all to-day. The slip has occurred in a very bad part of the road. Above it there

is a steep hillside and the bank on the other side drops practically sheer into the river. The road at this point has a very steep gradient. The exact time that the slip occurred was not known last evening, but it is thought that the heavy rain which set in on Saturday night and continued throughout yesterday loosened the soil on the hillside above the road and thus caused the slip.
