With a stroke of the imagination characteristic of so many of his father’s actions, King Edward has just combined the solution of an unusual situation with a charming compliment to his By his accession the King had to relinquish the office of Grand Master of the Order of the British Empire, to which he has now appointed Queen Mary. Thus she is the first woman Grand Master of any British Order. It is not generally known that she was also the first woman member of the Order of the British Empire, having been privately invested as Dame Grand Cross by the late King the day before the creation of the Order was announced in 1917.
