ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY FOR IMPERIAL CULTURE

The i all none 2 upon culture of recent scientific and technical developments will be the general motif of the addresses to be delivered to the monthly meetings of the Society for Imperial Culture. The society held its annual meeting on Saturday evening, when the first part of the evening was devoted to a short business session and the second to a conversazione. In the opening address on April 25, Dr. N. H. Parton will give a survey of recent scientific progress and its relation to politics, literature, the drama, art, and music will be dealt with by Mr L. C.

Webb, Mr H. W. Rhodes, Professor James Shelley. Mr James Fitzgerald, and Mr Will Hutchens respectively in lectures during the year. On the final evening, Dr. James Hight, Professor Shelley, and Mr L. F. de Berry will give a symposium and review of the whole.

The annual report for last year recorded a satisfactory session, with good attendances, considering that the membership was only 60. The syllabus dealt with outstanding periods in the arts and sciences and their revaluation in the light of present-day tendencies. The financial statement disclosed a sound position, there being a credit balance for the year of £23 8s 6d. There were no liabilities, and assets amounted to £34 2s 6d.

No new nominations having been received, the present officers were reelected. They are as follows: —Patron. Dr. James Hight; president. Professor James Shelley; vice-presidents, Mrs Claude Sawtell, Madame Gower Burns, Dr. D. E. Hansen, Mr W. G. Jamieson, and Mr L. F. de Berry; honorary secretary! Mr James Fitzgerald; honorary treasurer, Mr William Brock; council, Mrs H. A, Young, Miss Betty Hannam, Messrs E. G. T. Thomas, W. Slack, Alfred BunZi L. R. R. Denny, and Sydney Thompson; honorary auditor. Mr E. G. T. Thomas. The following musical programme was given:—Song, Mr J. Tennent;

piano solos, “Fantasie Nocturne” (Lischetizky) and "Spanish Dance” (Albeniz), Mr Alfred Bunz; songs, Miss Lilian Hanham; reading. Professor Shelley; vocal duet, “Graceful Consort,” from “The Creation” (Haydn), Miss Lilian Hanham and Mr J. Tennent; violin and piano, “Sonata in A Major, Opus 7” (Paul Juon), Mr Alfred Gordon and Mr Alfred Bunz; song, "The Broken Spirit” (Verdi), Mr J. Tennent; song, “My Mother Bids Me Bind My Hair” (Haydn), Miss Lilian Hanham.
