FIRST CENSUS RETURN

The honour of having its census return first of all New Zealand in the hands of the Government Statistician has fallen to Akaroa. The first return, published in Wellington on Saturday, showed that since 1926 the population of the borough of Akaroa has increased 93. Ten years ago the population was 522, and the 1936

return is 615. As soon as returns are complete, the population of each borough, city, town district, and county is being telegraphed to the Government Statistician, but these figures published from this telegraphed return are preliminary only, and subject to amendment.
