INTERPROVINCIAL CONFERENCE

♦- WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION The second interprovincial conference of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union was held at Timaru yesterday, about 150 delegates from North Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury, and South Canterbury attending. Mrs B. E. Evans, president of the South Canterbury branch, presided. After welcoming the delegates, Mrs Satterthwaite (Mayoress of Timaru) opened the conference. A motion of sympathy was passed with Miss Frances L. Cooper, secretary of the North Canterbury provincial executive, in the loss of her mother. The minutes of the previous conference held at Ashburton were read and confirmed. The following remits were passed after much interesting discussion:— (1) the president of a branch of the ‘ division must be one of the ad(2) That in the event of amalgamation with the Women’s Institute, the division’s name “Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union” be altered to New Zealand Country. Women’s Association (Inc.). (3) That owing to the difficulty experienced in securing suitable housekeepers the division would recommend that' the scale of wages be revised. Mrs B. E. Evans (Timaru) presented the report of the sub-committee set up by the combined meeting at Timaru regarding the difficulties experienced by country children on matters affecting their education. After discussion, the report was approved to be sent forward to the Dominion conference in Wellington next July. • Mrs Colin Mclntosh,'Dominion vicepresident, on behalf of the North* Canterbury delegates, thanked the South Canterbury members for their hospitality. Mrs Johnstone; former president of the Mid-Canterbury division, also extended thanks. It was announced that the next interprovincial conference would be held in Christchqrch, in March, 1937. The conference closed with many expressions of goodwill, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
