CHURCHES REOPENED IN MEXICO

GOVERNMENT’S DISPUTE WITH CATHOLICS

(Received March 27, 8.31 p.m.)

MEXICO CITY, March 26

The announcement that the Government had decided to permit the reopening of many. hundreds of churches since s early in 1935 indicated that another step had been, taken to- settle the dispute between the State, and the Catholic Church. The order does not apply to edifices taken over as schools, libraries, and for other uses, but only in cases where state officials ordered them to be closed. It is understood that one of the motives of the Government in reopening the churches is to remove Catholic opposition to its official socialistic educational programme. News of the reopening was received with rejoicing throughout Mexico especially at Vera Cruz and Tabasco where the churches have teen closed for between five and 10 years.
