LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION
TRIBUTE TO LATE KING’S UNTIRING WORK

WELLINGTON, March 26,
In the Legislative Council, moving a motion regarding the death of King George, similar to that moved in the House, the Hon. Mark Fagan, Leader of the Council, paid tribute to the King’s untiring work for the -people, during which time his Majesty had maintained the highest traditions of constitutional kingship, combined with a noble character and a high sense of personal duty. His influence had strengthened the foundations of democratic Parliamentary institutions.
Crowned heads had crashed in other lands; yet the foundations of the British throne were not only still Arm, but were actually stronger at the end of his reign. To-day in a chaotic and troubled world Britain was regarded as a safety zone of civilisation and democracy, which was due in no small measure to the actions and the lifelong example of the late Sovereign. The most fitting way to serve the memory of the King would be to give loyalty to the son whom he had left to reign, Mr Fagan said. Edward VIII. was well-versed with the people’s problems, and had already shown a human sympathy and understanding of the problems confronting the poorer section of his people. He was sure he expressed the mind of every member of the council when he said that they earnestly hoped that the ideals of his father would ever inspire and sustain the King throughout what they hoped would be a long reign of prosperity and peace. The Hon. R. Masters seconded the motion, which was carried. The Council adjourned till Tuesday,
