MONICA THACKER SHIELD
SUCCESS OF TECHNICAL OLD GIRLS’ TEAM
The annual competition for the Monica Thacker Shield, which is commonly regarded as the women’s lifesaving championship of Canterbury, was won by the Christchurch Technical College Old Girls’ team at the Tepid Baths last evening. Only two other teams competed, both being from the Christchurch Technical College, and the winning team was the same, girl for girl, -that won the shield for Technical College in 1933. The judges were Messrs C. F. Barnett and I. A Watkins (land dn ) and Messrs R, J. Fyfe and G. E. Billson (water work). Mr D. Ryland was timekeeper, and Mr J. Steward referee. The judges said that they were much impressed by the land drill work of the winners. It was as good as anything that had been done in the competition for the shield. In water work this team was very even, but the standard for all teams was high. The judges were pleased to see competitors adhering to the breast-stroke style, which was the basis of all rescue work.
