BOWLS

BEANLAND CUP Some time ago Mr X W. Beanland presented a cup to be competed for between "members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association Bowling Club, Wellington, and the Returned Soldiers’ Association Club of Christchurch. This was done with the Idea of promoting a 1 feeling of healthy rivalry between the two clubs. After several attempts It was found impracticable to carry out the proposal. At the commencement of the present season the Christchurch Association decided to carry out the competition as an annual fixture against the Edgeware Bowling Club. Accordingly conditions were mutually agreed on and the first match was played Edgeware green on Saturday. Despite the heavy green a very keen competition resulted* and some good play! ■ was seen. Edgeware, having the advantage of playing on its own green, won .by a narrow; margin. The vice-president, Mr X R. 1 Crocker, presented the cup,, and the president of the Returned Soldiers* Association congratulated Edgeware on its victory. INDOOR RINKS The Olympia Indoor Bowling Rinks celebrated its opening for the winter season on Saturday night. There was a large attendance of players and spectators, the green being fully occupied. In welcoming the visitors, Mr R. G. Brown referred to the excellent performances by indoor players at the recent Dominion championships. Two visiting rinks, Akaroa and Ashburton, played a special match, resulting in Ashburton. Eeatberetone: (s) 24, defeating Akaroa. Clements (s) 22.
