TIMARU WET FEBRUARY The unusual weather, experienced in Timaru during February was commented on In his report to the Timaru Borough' Counoil’a. meeting last night by the curator of the park (Mr A. W. Andereoa)*. who saijd fhat because of the.jjnusually severe storm which occurred, in the middle 6f February, t]ie rainfall for thhV month., wpifi the highest ever recorded during any month since records were taken at Timaru. The rapifall amounted |o 8.39 inches, compared with &30 inches for February, 1935. The record for last month was .129.6 hours, or 18.1 hours less than in February* 1935. Caroline Bay Various suggestions aiming at the improvement of Caroline Bay were embodied in a report from the-works committee of the Timaru Borough Council, which was : submitted 1 to ameeting of the council last night The committee reported that representatives of the Caroline Bay Association waited on the committee and submitted proposals, one of which was that a sound shell should be erected at a cost of £750, also a number of seats to cost £450, as set out in a plan made by the borough architect (Mr W, Panton) i The association said, that it.could contribute £550 towards the 'work, and asked that, the whole of the percentage of the takings from Lumby’s amusement devices handed over (-£ll3 18s 6d) and that from the, "scoota” heats (£43 Is lOd) be added, the balance to be paid out of the Khodes Be- ' quest, the ■ kmount to the credit of which was at present £12017s Sd. - The committee recommended that th£ council inspect the bay and look into the proposals, ' Further proposals with the object of improving the attractions at the bay were made by Mr G. S.- Cray, who suggested the outlay of £4OOO, expressing the opinion that if municipal assistance was forthcoming lor the purpose the payment of interest on suchja loan could be met by .the Caroline Bay Association, and that the gradual reduction of the debt could also be arranged so that any expenditure authorised would not be a charge oh ratepayers directly pr indirectly, ' Mr Crby suggested the expenditure of £2OOO on an extension of the lawns, v the installation of permanent multi-coloured lights, similar, to the constellation of lights in Bournemouth, England; and floodlights along the terraces fronting the bay , ■! ■ Regarding this letter, the association had expressed the opinion that the time was not opportune for such an ambitious scheme.
