A GREAT SUCCESS

PILGRIMS’ PARTY GUESTS AT “MONA VALE” . For members of the Canterbury Pilgrims' and Early Settlers’ Association, the quarterly social reunion is a great event, anticipated with eagerness and remembered with pleasure, and few of these happy gatherings have been more enjoyable than that held at "Mona Vale," Fendaltbn, on Saturday afternoon, when hundreds of guests gathered on the wide lawns overlooking the Wairarapa stream and strolled amongst the rose gardens, or sat in the shelter of the trees and exchanged greetings and reminiscences. The gaining was the largest that has been held for a long time, and amongst the guests who received a specially warm welcome were Mr Richard Evans, who ar* rived oh the Cressy, and Mr A. R. Pavitt, Who celebrated the ninety-sixth anniversary of his birthday on Thursday. and who arrived in Christchurch in April, 1850, some months before the arrival of the First Four Ships, i Mr E. R. Webb, president of the association. welcomed the guests, and apologised for the absence of Mrs Howell, of Lincoln, the patroness of the association, and for the Rev. F. G. Brittan. He expressed deep gratitude to, Mr and Mrs E. D. Johnson lor lending their beautiful grounds for the garden party. Mr Selwyn Bruce said that Mr Johnson had asked him to tell the pilgrims that he and Mrs Johnson were proud to welcome them to their home.

Prom the verandah, Mr A. Bidgood’s orchestra played an enjoyable programme of music, and tea was served from a marquee on the lawn. Members of the tea committee, who deserve great praise for the expedition with which they served tea to the large crowd, were Miss Lily Bowen (chairwoman), Mesdames H. L. Bowker, B. Field, A, H. Norris, V. Pimm, J. Parrott, G. L. Ostler, Frank Maddison, MiSses Mary Duncan. A. Kitson, A. Bowker. E. H. Carpenter, Winifred Cox, and Margaret Ross. 1 KINDERGARTEN PARTY the Selwyn Street Free Kindergarten has a willing band of workers in its local committee, for many of the members, who, now form this committee, have i been working for the kindergarten for more than 16 years, when them sons and? daughters were small cnßdreh attending kindergarten in the church ball rented by the association. In those days they organised various functions to raise sufficient money to buy a section of land for the erection of an building. Since the kindergarten has been completed they have continued their activities in an effort to .reduce the debt on the building. The party arranged by the committee on Saturday afternoon was held in the kindergarten, and stalls of fancy work, produce, sweets, and cakes Were well patronised. Mrs H. T, J. Thacker, president of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association, apologised lor the absence of the Hon. D. G.. Sullivan. and welcomed the guests, and Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., also spoke. A baby show added interest to the entertainment, the judge, Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston, awarding prizes, as follows:—Under three months, Heather Angus; under. six months, Jeanette ifinvig, and Brian Hopgood; under 12 months, Rex Blackler and Fay Mills; under 18 months, Frances Grimes and Shirley Knight. ’ Mrs N. Paterson was awarded a prize for the best article made from a sugar-bag. I Stall-holders were:—‘Fancy work: Mrs A. Williamson and Mrs J. Barnett; cakes: Mesdames E. Hessey and N. Paterson; produce: Messrs L. Cade and L. Wilson; sweets: Misses E. Pierce, A. Kerrigan, J. Boyds, and F. Fellow; icecream: Miss K. Griffiths; afternoon tea: MeSdames St. George Atkinson, C. Hutchings, and W. Moyle, Mesdames S. Wooten, and J. Hayward arranged the baby show. Mrs Hamlin is convener and Mrs W. H. Griffiths, honorary secretary, of the organising committee. SWIMMING CLUB’S DANCE Guests of the Canterbury University College Swimming Club were entertained in the Students’ Association building on Saturday evening, when a dance to raise funds towards tournament expenses was held. The committee responsible for the arrangements included Messrs M. Hilgendorf, O. P. Gabites, S. Bogle, J. M. Steeds, Misses Ruth Collins, Winifred Weenink, Myra Billens. Frank Kitchen’s band provided the music. ' Amongst those present were Misses Patricia Saunders, Myra Billens, Joan Barker, Joan Browne, Marjorie Wood, Ruth Wilson, Margaret Mace, Leslie Callaway, Join Curtis, May Herriott, Iris Herriott, Thelma Feron, Ruth Collins, Dulcie Pepper, Winifred Weenink, Fay Tichbond, Lois Black, Gwen Grange, Betty Simpson, Dorothy Neal, and Mary Brown.
