SPRINGS COUNTY COUNCIL
The members present at the monthly ' meeting of the Springs County Council were Crs. J. S. Simpson (chairman), J, H. Williams, D. V. Bailey, J. W. Kime, J. Woods, and C. H. Watson. ■The financial statement showed that there were credit balances of £914 16s Id in the Springston account, and £642 15s in the Greenpark ' account Ac- . counts for payment totalled; £1242. Rates outstanding amounted -to about £2OO. The chairman 'said'’that the council was likely to have a credit of between £4OO and £SOO at the end of the financial year. It was agreed that the position with regard to rates was very satisfactory. The chairman’s action in agreeing to a bitumen coat being laid on the Motu- . karara bridge was approved. . It was decided to reply to the Canterbury Progress League that the council had not formulated a long-term programme of highways improvement, and that it had no major works in contemplation beyond five miles of paving on the Southbridge-Sockburn highway during the coming, financial year and a similar length the following year. A cheque for £153 7s, being; subsidy of 12i per cent, on rates levied on farming lands in the Greenpaxlg riding, was received. Information regarding flood damage dpne to highways was sought by the Public Works Department The, chairman said that the damage done was * very light. Advice was received from the Main Highways Board that the council would be expected to maintain two. railway crossings from April 1. The Labour Department notified the council that Wednesday had been gazetted as the day on which the weekly half-holiday was to be observed in the county. The council made no. recommendation on a proposal , for a national - health scheme, as suggested by the executive of the Counties’ Association. It was reported that the. sealing contract on the main highway at Motukarara had been finished, and that the work was very satisfactory. • Tenders for leases of reserves Were considered, In all but one case the tenders of the present -occupiers! were accepted. The tender of Mr -H/ W. Bennett, at £ss 10s, was accepted for 40 acres at Ellesmere. . . i ■ The overseer's waslcaosidered and adopted.
