AUTUMN SHOWS

fti 1 f CHEVIOT As AND P. GATHERING EXCELLENT DISPLAY OF HORSES The autumn show season in Caniactmnr opened on Saturday with the iwwwiaf rather logs at Cheviot and Mayfield. the Cheviot function was the twenty-seventh of its career, and favoured with ideal weather there was ■ large gathering of farmers and their families from all parts of the district. 'The wind which blew with gale-like force in the southern half of North Ousterbury did not extend to the Cheviot district. The show was easily the most successful yet held by the association. Entries exceeded those of last year by •bout 150, and as the greater part of the Increase was in one of the -most important sections—draught and light horses—the standard of the display in this department was much ahead of that in recent years. There were more than 60 entries in the draught horse Miction, and, moreover, the quality of file working teams and female horses was up to metropolitan standard. A. Giilanders (Domett) scored a heavy run of successes with bis mares, taking most of the premier awards and file female championship. The blue ribbon for geldings was secured by S. H. Milne, who was the next principal prize-taker in the section. More than TO entries came forward In the hackney section, and this was another display of good quality. Some «C the classes attracted up to a dozen competitors, and there was a good representation of thoroughbred blood included. The champion ribbon was «ae*ed .by Sir Charles Clifford’s i Bard Luck, which won the 11 stone daw with the championship after prewailing In the maiden class. Another rood winner was Mrs D. G. H. Bush’s ■osetary, who prevailed in the 13 alone class against seven other competitors and in the lady’s hack class, Ibe ring of 12 in the latter event including some well-mannered and excellent types. The attraction of the show was the display. of saddle ponies, there being More than 80 forward in the eight An average of more than 10 entries a class is unusual at country dunes, and the competition naturally cn Saturday was very keen. The champion pony was Mrs A. Gillanders’ Vim, which won three of the classes fit the section and appears destined for success at the larger gatherings. Miss C. Black won two of the saddle classes with Wee Gaiety, another stylish mover. The big rings in both the hackney and pony sections maintained file interest of visitors throughout the ademocm. The two weak sections of the show were sheep and cattle. A small dispiay of cattle in the autumn in a district which is not devoted much to dairying could be expected, but' the poor display numerically and the moderate one in quality was somewhat surprising. Considering its suitability for sheep raising, the absence of purebred flocks in the district is somewhat difficult to account tor. AH classes of pastoral land are available in the district, which, moreover, enjoys a much greater freedom from weather excesses than probably •ny other part of the province. There were some good Corriedales on show OD Saturday, and in a few of the daases good competition. Ensor Bros. fry* moirt of the first awards and the two champion ribbons with nicelyfreeeed Sheep. There was little competition in the Southdowns, and less in Hw Knglfch Leicesters. The display of fifis was naturally not up to the usual Ofudard on account of the wet season. There was good competition in the vegetables and roots sections, and the display of these was also much larger than usual, whilst the domestic produce and other subsidiary sections were also outstanding. The committee, with Mr W. A. Douglas as president, got the events through promptly and enabled the parade of prize stock to be staged on time. The hig display of light horses and ponies made this part of the irnlhanrlinir ft imftftftwiiflr affair.
