The ccunty engineer (Mr W. Bullivant) said at the council meeting that most of the men would probably return after seasonal work, when the works would be reopened. Cr. H. Everett remarked that in the Motueka district, men were leaving farm work to go on to the Motueka aerodrome and other relief works. They found it more profitable on relief works than on farms. The chairman (Mr J, Corder) expressed the opinion that if the Public Works Department offered 15s a day in wages, the councils would probably have to pay that wage. Teece Introduced the sub-; ject by 1 asking |oc a survey of the mad with a view to a general improvement. The ccunty engineer said he considered that the road was the first work which should be done in the district.
