WEST OF ENGLAND SOCIETY

A large number of members and friends attended the first social and dance of the season held by the West of England Society in the Orange Hall, Worcester street The president (Mr P. E. L. Broad) welcomed the guests. As this was the first function held by the society since the death of King George V., members paid a silent tribute. A motion of sympathy was also passed with members of the family of Mr W. Murch, one of the oldest members of the society. Songs were sung by Miss Grace Torkington, Miss M. Grigar, Mr J. Taylor, and Mr W. Inkster, and a recitation was given by Miss Joy Sears. A vote of thanks was passed to the performers. Prizes were won as follows: Monte Carlo dance, Mrs L. Epps and Miss G. Epps; lucky spot dance, Mrs C. Deans and Mr McKenzie; lucky entrance ticket. Mrs T. R. Bates and Mr J, Bailey. Mr J. Cawtheray was master of ceremonies.

The March meeting of the Broadfield branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union w&s held in the local schoolroom, With Mrs W. Boyle ptesidmg. Mrs Boyle gave a report of the recent meeting of the provincial executive. The roll call was "Should our husbands help in the house." Arrangements were made to hold a picnic at Scarborough on March 19. . ~ . The results of competitions, judged by Mesdames Prebble, J. Gallagher, and D. Miss R. Crompton (Ford road, Gpawa) entertained several friends at an enjoyable afternoon tea party held at Beath's tea rooms," in honour of Miss Marjorie Cox (Opawa), whose marriage will take place shortly. Each guest brought Miss Cox a gift for the bathroom of her future home. Those present included Miss Marjorie Cox, Mesdames E. Rawlings, W. Read, J. Fahey, E. Rissman, A. Bamford, S. Russell, W. Mapplebeck, Misses V. Marshall and R. Crompton. Mrs G. Owen and Mr s E. Rissman were also hostesses at gift parties held for Miss Cox> who received" many useful gifts for the ktichen of her new home, which will be in Wellington.
