Mrs M. J. Pawsey ("Rocklea,'? Hawarden), and her daughter, Mrs A. C. Fairbairn (Opawa) will leave early in April for a visit to Great Britain and the Continent. Mrs Donald Cowie (formerly Miss Ruth Dudley) will leave Christchurch'with her husband on March 30 for a trip to Great Britain and the Continent. She will travel to Australia by the Maunganui, and after spending a week in Sydney will leave by the R.M.S. Orsova for England, via Suez. Mrs E. Litchfield left yesterday morning for Dunedin, where she will be the guest of Madame Winnie Eraser. ' Mr and Mrs H. Thodey (Wellington) are visiting Christchurch and are the guests of Dr! and Mrs Clennell Fenwick, Gloucester street west. Mrs T. L. Cowlishaw and Miss Joan Lee (Beverley street) are paying a visit to Hanmer Springs. Miss Cowlishaw (Knowles street) and Mrs Fred Banks (Aikman's road) left yesterday for Hanmer Springs." ''" Miss Fitzpatrick (Hawarden) is spending a holiday with Miss Ryan, "Woodburh," Tai Tapu. The engagement is announced of Ernest John, eldest son of the late Mrs Miles and of Mr J. H. Miles (Rangiora), to Elsie Blanche, third daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Beech. Linwdod. The engagement is announced of Monica Dorothy, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs S. McAlister (Norwood street, Beckenham), to Douglas, youngest son of Mrs H. W. Abell, Elizabeth street, Riccarton, and of the late Mr Abell (Glasgow, Scotland). On Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock at the Anglican Cathedral, a service of intercession will be held for members of the Mothers' Union, and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance of members. The first Karitane birthday party held, by the Lyttelton branch of the Plunket Society to assist the funds of the Lady King Karitane Hospital at Cashmere Hills proved very successful. Many mothers attended to show their appreciation of the society's work. Nurse Twentyman addressed the gathering, and Mesdames Abbot and Herdman were the winners of the competitions. A suitably decorated birthday cake was made and given by a member of the committee. On a holiday tour of the world, an attractive Irishwoman, the Hon. Mrs S, Baring, arrived at Wellington this week from London by way of Australia. Travelling with her is Miss Y. 1 H, Fitzgerald. Mrs Baring is fdnd "of horses, and hopes to visit some of the racing studs in New Zealand before leaving for Canada. She herself, she 'said, was a horsebreeder and dealer, until she had sold her Leicestershire place and went to live in London. Her husband was a master of fox hounds in County Limerick, Ireland. At the United Service Hotel on Monday evening, April 27, a large bridge party will be held in the dining room and lounge in aid of the Palestine Plunket Society. Tables may be booked at the office at the United Service Hotel. A special seaside carnival dance organised by the North Beach Surf Club will be held in the North Beach Hall this evening. There will be novelties, balloons, paper hats. Music will be played by Percy Butler and his Serenaders. The last trolley-bus will leave for the city at midnight.
