SURFACING OF SECTION NOW COMPLETED
The Main South road, from McNamara's corner to the Waitaki bridge, has been completely surfaced with bitumen and is ready for traffic. There is still a stretch between McNamara's comer and Quinn's corner to be completed.
Personal Mrs A. Royi Deep creek, will represent the Waimate branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union at the national conference in Auckland. Mr G. Dash, Mayor of Waimate, was informed yesterday that Captain G. M. Dash, of Sydney, has just published, a book on Hammondvllie, the land settlement town near Sydney. Mr Dash has sent Captain Dash a copy of his own well-known "Book of Waimate" in exchange for a copy of Captain Dash's book. Mr Dash has received notification from the Minister for Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) of his reappointment for the ensuing year as officer for child welfare for the district. Fire Prevention Week Fire prevention week will begin in Waimate this morning. Mr E. O'Malley has been appointed for the fire brigade and the borough council to make a tour of inspection in the town, and to give advice on methods of preventing and dealing with fires. Fire Brigade The Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade intends to defend the Canterbury Provincial Shield for flremanship at Geraldine at Easter. Two teams, compris-. ing six men, are practising in preparation. Redcliff Power Extension The poling of the first section of th'i Redcliff electric power extension it completed and the section is now being wired. . Cricket i The Waimate cricket competition has been declared closed, and the championship awarded to the Old Boys' Club - , i This decision was made at a meeting of the executive of the Cricket Sub-Association, because of the impossibility of playing the competition out, through harvest operations and unfavourable weather. The positions of the leading teams after the last competition matches played on February 15 were:— P. W. L. D. Pts. Waimate A 11 7 4 0 40 Old Boys .. 9 7 1 1 38 Redcliff ..11 6 5 0 32 Waimate B 9 4 5 0 32 The Waimate A team has a small lead in points, but has played two more games than Old Boys, and has lost four matches, against one loss by Old Boys. The Old Boys' Club is six points ahead of Redcliff and Waimate B, but this lead is not particularly substantial in view of the eight-point win system of awarding points. Together with Old Boys, Waimate B have played two matches fewer than the other Reading teams. The ending of the competition does not bring the cricket season to a close, as a programme of friendly matches is to be played. To-day Waimate B will play High School, at High School, and a combined team from Waimate A and Redcliff will play a combined C.F.C.A.Old Boys' team. Ram Fair At yesterday's meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association the following officials were appointed for the ram fair on March 24:—Marshal, Mr E. G. Hay; stewards, Messrs H. J. C. Harper, T. Hamilton, E. Stokes, E. C. d'Auvergne, and D. Studholme. High School Barracks More praise was given to the High School cadets yesterday by Major M. A. Stedman, who inspected the parade. Major Stedman complimented the company on its general appearance, and Captain L. de F. Ensor on his efforts. Inter-School Tennis A tennis team from the Timaru Girls' High School visited the Waimate High School yesterday, playing a match against the local school. Miss Eve Lee accompanied the team. Timaru won by 7 sets to 2, and 59 games to 33. School Swimming Sports At the Waimate primary schools' interhouse swimming sports Green house won with 47 points;- Red House was second with 38 points, Yellow House third with 31, and Blue fourth with 28. I •, An enjoyable time was spent at a social afternoon arranged by the Glenavy Women's Institute in honour of the secretary, Miss Mona Cuthbertson, on the eve of her marriage. The programme began with community singing, games, and competitions. Items were given by Mesdames Archer, Cuthbertson, Miller, Trezise, and Hamilton, and Miss Jean McLean. After afternoon tea, Mrs Miller presented the guest with a picture, and wished her a happy future. Other speakers were Mrs J. G. Hamilton and Misses Alexander and, Smart.,
