FLOOD AT AKAROA
It is raining here to-day, but I hope we don't have another flood. The other flood was really a terrible ohe, the worst in memory. We went to school that morning, as usual, but it rained and. rained all day 4 We had been in school for only about half-an'-hour when our school bus driver came down to see if we could come home at once because the town Was under Water and it was still raining hard. We soon discovered the town was under water, so not only the bus pupils, but also all. the rest of the school was dismissed. Water up to our ankles waa, flowing down the street past our school. Wheti we turned into the main street what a sight met,our eyes! About two feet of water Was flowing down the street A creek had blocked and was (flooding the town. We tried to get through, but our engine stopped. After trying for some time we decided it was hopelegs and that we would have to spend the night in AkarM. However along fcanies a motor-lorry and towed us through. The road was underwater in many places and the flats were just sheets ot water.
When I arrived home I had a look all round our ereek because I have never seen.it so high before. The roaring of the waters, and the rolling of the boulders was terrible. In one place the creek
was up to the detifcing of our bridge. It Carried away a huge, wllioW tree, and took it down with big stones still held in its roots. -'MATE MIBSHtPMAia L.8.H., ftoQin§6n'is Bay. We should serve her . . . We are her children . . . God give health to Mothers all. " ' -BETTY .WILSON, Spreydoa.
