ELECTRICITY PROFITS FOR STREET LIGHTING

TO THB BDITOB 0* THIS PUBS*. Sir,—What should be done with the excess profits • of the Municipal Electricity Department is again the cause of further argument with our ' public men. To take the profits and reduce the city rates is surely wrong, because many of the large ratepayers are very small users of electricity, and for the department ; to light the streets free of charge to the city is also wrong, as this would be another way of exploiting the users of electricity.. The Manchester Corporation set us a fine example by refunding its customers—users of electricity—the unexpected profits made/and at the same time reduced their charges. The department could certainly be less parsimonious with street lighting, seeing that it does not pay for current used after shops and industries close down. I can see more "running shoes" being required.—Yours, etc., R R March 9, 1936.
