OBITUARY

MBS J. H. A. ELMSUE The death has occurred at her residence, Rapaki road, Christchurch, of Mrs J. H, A. Elmslie, widow of the Rev. Dr. John Elmslie, at the age of 82 years. Mrs Elmslie was the older daughter of Mr John Anderson, who founded what is now known as Anderson’s. Ltd. She was born in 1853 in the house adjoining her father’s forge, where, in the early days, he acted as the only metal worker, whether the work was shoeing horses or making wedding rings. In 1860 the family moved to Inveresk, further east in Cashel street. From there Mrs Elmslie attended Miss Ashwin’s school in Armagh street. During her girlhood Mrs Elmslie spent much time in rid: ing. It was quite usual for her to travel all the way on horseback to

visit friends—the Thackers, the Hays, or the Buchanans—on Banks Peninsula, or the Douglass's at Broomfield, near Arpberley. In 1875 Mrs Elmslie went with her father on an extended tour to Europe, going Home by Suez, Italy, and the Rhine, and returning through the United States. In 1881 she married, as his second wife, the Rev. Dr. John Elmslie. of St. Paul’s Church, and* during the remainder of his ministry took an interested, though unobtrusive, part in the various activities of that parish and congregation. After her husband’s death in 1907. Mrs Elmslie lived in Great Britain for 11 years. During the war she was an official visitor to New Zealand soldiers in the London hospitals, and she continued untiringly at this work until compelled by ill-health to relinquish It.

Mrs Elmslie returned, to New Zealand in 1918, and since then, except for three years in Hawke’s Bay, she has lived in and about Christchurch. For the last 10 years she has lived at Rapaki road, Murray Aynsley’s Hill. About five years ago she had a serious illness, and since then she has lived in increasing retirement. Mrs Elmslie is survived by a son and a daughter, and six step-children.
