' Scout Gilwell Camp Twenty-two candidates, including three commissioners, entered the weekend Scout Gilwell course, at “Te Maru,” 'North Beach, last Saturday afternoon. The camp will continue over five weekends, the last of which’will be devoted to a first-class “hike."

The candidates are divided into* three patrols—“Morepork,” “Airdale, and “Seagull," and each member is given the opportunity of acting as a leader or second. ■ The first week-end was a,, great eyeopener" to riiany, .of the-Vcandidates, and all were kept briskly blithe move from the moment’ they l first entered the camp. The y 1 first duty/ ot the patrols- was to make a “lay-out for their respective camp sites, and after clearing the scrub to pitch their tents, regular sessions were then conducted by the camp staff, these being interspersed with tests and spare time activities. Cooking 'and preparation of meals also formed an important part of the training and the cooks for the day were deserving- of every credit. '■ The three deputy camp chiefs,comprising the Gilwell campstaff are, Dr. P. Clennell Fenwick, Dominion Chief Commissioner, who acts as scoutmaster, and Commissioners W. E. S. Furby and E; Grey, who act as assistant scoutmasters. The work of the camp has been set to a very high standard and members of the staff are to be congratulated on the very efficient way in which the camp is being conducted. On Sunday a “Scouts’ Own” service Was held, the address. being given by the Dominion Chief Commissioner, who later took the opportunity of presenting Akela Deader J. S. Partridge with the service medal.
