GENEROUS CHRISTCHURCH
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS, Sir. —After an absence of 50 years I return to find the old city much the same, of course larger, but the sanfie spirit of kindness, hospitality, and charity still abounds. . Not for me is there any surprise at the astoundingly large sums raised for the Mayor’s Fund, etc., only in the old days we did it differently. Many a man here who has had reverses has found on his office desk on Monday morn a goodly sum running Into hundreds, and no one to thank. But now we have street collections, etc., and 1 see that excellent body, the Young Women’s Christian Association. is to have one. I have met in mv travels many New Zealand girls who would have been • stranded in large cities had it not been for this association, so I say' to all who will be abroad that day, “Put some odd pennies in your purse, stroll down the streets of beautiful old , generous Christchurch, and smile, smile, smile,” —Yours, etc.. G.H.W. March 6, 1936.
