Among the arrivals from the north, by the Maori yesterday morning were the Hon. W. Perry. M.L.C., Messrs H. E. Herring, M.P., and P. McSkimming, M.P. Professor J. Shelley, who has been attending the Watt bi-centenary celebrations at Wellington, returned to Christchurch yesterday morning. Mr H. F. Baird, of the staff of the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory, is in Wellington on business connected with the head office of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr P. N. Jeffreys, of Christchurch, who has been spending a few days in Napier, left there yesterday, and will reach Christchurch tomorrow morning. Mr George Gould, chairman of directors of the Christchurch Press Company. Ltd., arrived in Napier last night to attend the press conference. Major-General Sir William Sinclair-Burgess, K.8.E., C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, l eturned to Christchurch yesterday after having inspected the Burnham camp. Mr J. W. G. Brodie, general manager of British and Dominion Traders, Ltd., will leave Wellington on Friday by the Wanganella on a business trip to Australia. Mr W. Davidson, formerly manager of the Sembrong rubber estate in the State of Jahore, Malaya, has been appointed property manager for the tung oil plantation of Empire Tung Oil Products., Ltd., in the Bay of Plenty. Mr W. M. Maxwell, formerly manager cf the Plaza Theatre, and at present managing the Crystal Palace Theatre, will leave to-night by the inter-island express steamer for Wellington, where he will be in charge of the De Luxe Theatre, Lower Hutt. Mr Norman McKinnell, representative in Australia of Edward Lloyd, Ltd., the British newsprint manufacturers, is attending the press conference at Nanier. He will make a tour of the South Island before returning to Australia. Mr Roy Puddle, formerly a member of the linotype staff of “The Press,” who has left to join the Baptist ministry in Auckland, was met by his fellow-workers and presented with a fountain-pen as a token of esteem. The presentation was made by the printer, Mr E. E. C. Hyde. Cr. T. Andrews, chairman of the reserves committee of the Christchurch City Council, left for Palmerston North by aeroplane yesterday. He will go to Auckland to-day, where he will attend the annual conference of the Parks Superintendents’ Association. Mr M. J. Barnett, superintendent of parks and reserves, who will also attend the conference, has already left for Auckland. Superintendent J. J. Salmon, of the Dunedin city fire brigade, will retire on February 29, after 46 years’ service with the brigade, and more than 50 years’ service as a fire-fighter. He was appointed deputy-superintendent in 1908, and superintendent in June, 1929. Mr Salmon, who will be succeeded by DeputySuperintendent R. H. Price, will leave Dunedin on March 5 on an extended holiday to Hastings and Auckland. —Press Association,
