REGISTRATION OF PAINTERS
BETTER WORK THE AIM CONFERENCE OP FEDERATION. The registration of painters to improve the quality of their work, was one of the major questions discussed by the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Master Painters, Decorators, and Sign-writers, at Wellington last week. . , The remit, which was unanimously approved, proposed tjhat registration be granted to painters to improve the status of the tirade, and also to improve the quality of .the painting work done throughout the Dominion. It was felt that some such system was necessary because of -the large amount of cheap and inferior work carried out during the depression by men, many of whom were not skilled tradesmen, and at wages considerably below the standard award'wage. The conference also considered a remit calling for amendment to the Contractors Protection and Wages Liens Act, to give' sub-contractors and suppliers of materials full protection for payment from money available for the particular work, being undertaken. It was decided to approach the Government and a number of. allied organisations of employers and workers seeking support for. the proposal.' Officers elected were:—President, Mr g. W. Bowden (Christchurch); .vicepresidents, Messrs P. Findlay (Dunedin) and :H. Guise (Wellington): executive, Messrs E; J, Bell, P. Torikin, JV Buchanan; F. J, Foate, E- Lockwood, G. F. Mazey. and A. El Hunter (Christchurch); representative on New Zealand Employers’ Federation, Mr T. A. Wells (Wellington); secretary, Mr D. I. Magdonald (Christchurch), The next conference will be held In Chnstchurch in February, 1937.
