TRAMWAY BOARD VACANCY

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l have as much right to speak for the people of Christchurch as Mr Archer and his fellow members on the Tramway Board have to foist a Citizens’ Association nominee in the person of Mr Lyons on a board where the people do not want him. The people decided that they wished Mr G. E. Jones had not been standing; it is quite possible" a different person altogether would have been elected: The only fair thing to do would be to appoint the. highest' unsuccessful .candidate if Mr Archer’s contentions are right that this is a Citizens’ Association seat. ' But no, Mr Archer does not believe in this. The next on the list is an enemy of Mr A, rpher’s*. 1

understand that the decision of the Labour Representation Committee, to which Mr Archer refers, was that the Citizens’ Association nominee should, be a candidate who would ,be“ acceptable to Labour. Well, who is to' say whether the nominee is acceptable or no—Mr Archer or. the Labour pafty? Is* the Tramway Board the Labour party. I bet Mr Lyons will riot be acceptable to Mr Howard after the Lincoln- College affair. Surely the Labour members on the. .Tramway Board could not expect Mr Hdfcvard to, sit table with , Mfr. Lyons.,* The whbje' thing ;is a large.-*' Fancyj any Citizens’ Association - nominee being , acceptable to Labourl , Where, oh where, are we going to? Pbor' old working- man still being bluffed into believing that there is a difference between Citizens’ ' Association and. Labour. —Yours, etc., FED UP. February 21, 1936.
