FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, SJVD INTOXICATED DRIVER Albert . Counsel, aged 48, < a meat cartage contractor <Mr $. A. Young) was charged with being intoxicated in charge of a car. ' ~ Senior-Sergeant D. L. Calwell said that-a constable haid arrested Counsel in Phillip street, Linwood. The accused was driving a!meat truck. He was obviously under, the influence of liquor and appeared not to have control of the truck. He had not been before the court for such an offence before. Mr Young said that' the cancellation of the accused's license would mean the .end of his business. He was a meat cartage contractor and on this day he started the delivery of meat at 4 a.m. He was driving all day in the rain and was wet through. At 5 p.m. he met a friend and had three drinks. He had been driving for 27 years and never had a collision, and in this instance was only a short distance from his. home. , . "A drunken motorist is bad enough, but a man intoxicated in charge of a heavy meat van is far worse," said the magistrate. "If it does not cancel his license the court will. carry a heavy moral responsibility." ■■' ' " Counsel was fined £ls and ordered to pay costs. His license was ordered to be endorsed. YOUNG WOMAN'S THEFT A young woman whose name was ordered to be suppressed pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing three pairs of shoes, valued at £2 9s oa, from a city shoe factory. She was convicted and placed on probation for six months and ordered to make restitution at the rate of 2s 6d a week. CHARGES OF THEFT Thomas Hill and Harry Swann, who had earlier appeared before the Supreme Court on charges of breaking and entering, were convicted and discharged on several charges pf theft. They were represented by Mr J. •&• Moloney. YOUTHS SENT TO BORSTAL i Alvin Henry Wilson, aged 17, and :Huia Anzac Oglesby. aged 18 (Mr J. K. Moloney), both of Auckland, pleaded guilty to charges of converting a car, theft, and failure to comply with the terms of their release on probation The charges were:—(l) Unlawfully converting a car, the property of P. M. Keenan; (2) stealing six gallons of petrol valued at Us, at Rakaia; and (3) stealing an overcoat, hat, and rug, valued at £7, the property of Patrick Michael Keenan. Each was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation at Aucka Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes said that in July of last year the two youths appeared before the Supreme Court at Auckland on 11 charges of breaking and entering, and were admitted to probation for three years. They came to Christchurch this month, and on the night of February 11, with a younger boy, they converted a x:ar to their own use and travelled south. At Rakaia they drove into a bowser, and after obtaining petrol drove off without paying. , In the back of t£e car were the stolen overcoat and hat. It seemed their • had made up their minds to lead a : Me ofr,?yime, ; / Mr Moloney drew attention to the extreme youth of the accused and said that they both came from good homes in Auckland. There seemed to be something extraordinary causing them to do as they had. They wanted discipline, but needed treatment which would save them from a life of crime. On the charge of stealing a rug, hat, and overcoat, the accused were ordered to be detained in the Borstal Institution for a term not exceeding three years. ' On the other charges they were convicted and discharged. TRAFFIC CHARGES Offenders against traffic regulations were fined as follows (and ordered to pay costs):— .
