TURF GOSSIP Bfccarten Winners Riccarton was represented by three runners at the Winton Jockey Club's meeting yesterday, and two of the three, Penelope and Violenta, won, while McHeath finished third in the Winton Cup. Penelope and McHeath, members of J. S. Shaw's team, have credited several wins to their respective owners; Messrs hj X* Mi Samson and W. A. Lands, but in the case of Violenta it was the mare's first win since she'was purchased last October by Mr M. Dawson, of Dunedin. Violenta is a member of J. W. Jennings s team, and after her prominent running on the first day of the Dunedin meeting her success undoubtedly would be well appreciated. Mr Dawson has not figured as an owner of gallopers previously, but he is wen known in the light harness sport. J. Henderson, of Oamaru, was the previous owner of Violenta.' Form at Winton

On the form disclosed in the steeplechase at the Diamond Jubilee meeting of the Winton Jockey Club, Southland appears to have at'least two or three aspirants to Grand National honours. The winner, Trfsox, gave a brilliant display of jumping and showed more than average pace on the fiat. ' Parasang also'came into th* category of national aspirants. He had done a lot of work but apparently was not quite up to concertpitcb, and he was asked to cover a lot of unnecessary

ground. This dM not help his chances. Red Lance ran a good race for second money, and i» a prospective winner. Ecclefeehan was going well until he fell at the last fence, and the mistake cost him second money. It waa a most promising field and Southland should be represented when the big jumping events come up fbr decision in the north. The Riccarton-trained Penelope won the Flying Handicap in a tight finish after leading all the way. The South Canterbury-trained colt, Coat of Arms, won the Novice Stakes in another' ewsa finish; and paid a great price for a form horse. ««_» Trivet set a solid pace in the Winton Gup, and although she had to b* kept up to her work in the straight, th# issue was never in doubt. When schooling Parasang on the Invercargill tracfe on- Wednesday morning. A. J. Peart suffered injuries which will keep him out of the saddle for a few weeks. Apparently Parasang crashed through the first obstacle, dislodging Peart, who had two niw broken and also received inittries to hw head. St, Tam&Bt Candida** Since going into the charge of J. M. Though on that occasion he had only the narrowest of margins at the finish from Donegal and Nightlass, the sobd manner in which be finished waa iropres* sive. With he is not harshly treated in the Champion Hack Cup at Te Aroha, Where the mile and- a quarter journey should suit him admirably. As he is engaged in the St; Legers, hia showing at To Aroha will be watched with interest; for many good judges have a high opinion of the colt.

Answer to> Correspondent "Not" Sure?'-*~<a>; Top Coat is, i*ow a gelding; bat-la* season he was a colt, (fa) Tops Coat started in the Karcourt GtOd Cup of 1934. Gallop is tft* Bark Blue* Tiger, winner of the Oringi Bigferweight Handicap, at Woodville yesterday; did his final gallop on Thursday in rather unusual efeeumstances, and his-case serves to illustrate further that the watch is not always a reliable guide to a horse's prospects. When he went out to gallop en Thursday the Woodvijle course was enveloped in fog, so much so that it was impossible to see any of the posts. . Blue Tiger's task was six furlongs on the course proper, and his jockey wasi Ben Kowhai, a Maori lad, whose instructions from B. Goodman were to, yell as he approached the six-furlong barrier. He was> soon swallowed up by the fog; and the watch-holders waited in sfignce; Nothing happened for so long: that it seemed as if he had lost bis way. Kowhai, however, knew what he was doing and that as long as he did not bit a fence he was still somewhere on the course- He cautiously felt his way through the fog, but as soon as something loomed up in the fog he dug both heels in end let out an' ear-splitting screech, which must have been heard for miles. Blue Tiger, thoroughly startled, put his ears back and went for bis life. Some time later the drum of galloping hoofs was heard at the bottom of the straight and Blue Tiger, fiat out, flashed past the post, being: clocked to run the six furlongs in Irnin 33sec. The watches were within a second or so of each other. The times had to be believed nearly correct, but later it was ascertained that the first object Kowhai had spotted in the fog was one of the plough marks, the best part of a furlong before the six-furlong barrier, TROTTING NOTES Bracketed em the Totalisator Bracketed horses at New Brighton to—cfrsv inccnxcl©J~~" Belfast Handicap—Ann Pointer and Bombay Girl; Buddy and Canadian Prince. Maidens's team, and he will be bracketed with Peter Locanda in the principal event at New Brighton to-day. Ciro is by Wrack—Pearlchild and in the matter of" breeding he has everything to recommend him. An Outsider Wilbur White, on anything he has done iff the last few years, appears to be well psßt the years, of usefulness as a trotter, and his supporters at New -Brighton are entitled to a big dividend U be wing.A Good Combination Hfc.Stewart and Tangata are a good combination; andat the last meeting at New Brighton he ran a second to GunjtfetAl in the Mace Memorial, and won theßownai Handicap in 2min 46 2-5 aeci - A horse of his calibre should not ;be troubled by heavy going. A Promising FIBy V. teeming has in hand a nice filly, Diversion, by Hey de Oro from Escapade, and her engagement in the Belfast Handicap to-morrow will not be altogether forgotten after the reasonably good support accorded her at the recent Wellington meeting. Diversion is a very promising juvenile, likely to make good in the near future. Her dam, Escapade, was one of the best trotters New Zealand has known. Well Bred j Cyrano, a starter in the Belfast Han-! dicap- at New Brighton to-morrow, is j a three-year-old gelding by Wrack—j Nantwich, a product of Durbar Lodge. Baddy's Engagement Buddy, at one time trained at New Brighton by W. Warren, is now trained by C. K. Yeatman. At one time this gelding showed promise of developing into a pacer above the average. Peter' Silk Peter Silk, engaged in the Belfast Handicap at New Brighton to-day, is a four-year-old gelding by SilkJThread from Queen's Own, and was bred by her present owner, Mr D. Spence. Queen's Own was a Arte race mare, but so far has failed to leave anything approaching her own class. tuck, of the Draw Tile luck: ©I the draw at the barrier might have a big influence in the result of races at New Brighton to-day. Unfortunately for stay-at-home backers and many others who like to study an easy programme, the trotting authorities will not allow the draw for positions to be published. At the mile and a half post it is possible to place a big number of horses on the front line, but a position on the outside means covering much extra ground. At times a horse in the second row has a big advantage over others in the front line. BANKS PENINSULA R.C. I TO-BATO PROGRAMME The New Brighton Trotting; Club's summer meeting will be-held to-day; but although the. weather may be-fine the course proper is likely to be heavy. The fields all through are well up to the average in the matter of numbers and quality, and interesting racing: is assured. Special arrangements have been made by the (3ndstebnrca, Tram* ways Board for the conveyance of racegoers to and from the course, and as the first race will not start until 1 p.m. every opportunity will be given business people to attend. The day's programme is as follows: — 1 p.m.— IMPROVERS' HANDICAP, of 130 sots. ITnhopplwi trotters, Sato 4Bsec class. One mile and » half. Beethoven ..ser Bojulftn* scr Bellerina ..scr San Mlehele'.. scr Demesne .. scr Sylvan , .. scr Dolores Silk .. scr Winnow .. ser Gay Crusader ser Bon Chance .. 48 isis ..scr Cracksman ..48 Master Wrack scr Great Wood .. 60 Moerangi •• ser Mother's Boy 69" Princess Marie scr Fairy Brooks ... 132 Few of the trotters engaged in the Improvers* Handicap have any public; form to recommend theratr and although more than half the field will start from the limit, some of the handicapped horses may be preferred. Cracksman, on 48 yards behind, gave- a good dis~ play when he won the Mitcham Han* dicap on Boxing Day in 3min 28 4-ssec, and he is a better stayer than Bon Chance, on the same mark. Royal Parrish has raced consistently without winning, and San Michele and Winnow have shown speed. The public will give most consideration to the chances of Cracksman, Bon Chance, and Boyal Parrish. 1.40 pjn^— BELFAST HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. 3mint 43see class. One mile and a half. No horse engaged has so far enjoyed any outstanding success, but several have shown promise. Credit Funds was twice run-ner-up to Ace Pot at the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting on January 2, and at non-totalisator meetings held in North Canterbury King's Drive won three races. Golden Miller, Lucky Jack, Shrewdy, and Passport are all improving, and possibly the favourites will be Credit Funds, King's Drive and Shrewdy. 2.15 ».m.— DENTON MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. 4min 36sec class. Lady Fame has raced very consistently of late, and her double victory at Forbury Park, foEowing a sterling effort over a mile and a half at Adv dington, entitles her to respect in any class of race. The journey should not be too far for her, and though Isabel Derby has disappointed in latest engagements, she is better than her running suggests. Of the other limit horses Tangatu has the brightest prospects, but De Soto, on 24 yards, is a good pacer. Prairie King will be well suited by a soft track. Guy Junior is a good, genuine pacer, and at home over any distance. In a good betting race the favourites should he Lady Fame, Guy Junior, and Tangatu. j 2.5© p.m.— STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of 146 sovs. 3min 30sec class. One mile and a half. He has a big task in front of him, and posibly speculators j will prefer seme of the limit horses. Of this division Carrageen will have friends, but he has disappointed more than once. Celebrity is a speedy young pacer of promise. Dual is solid; and! Purveyor has prospects. The best may be Carrageen, Celebrity, and #lir Fay. 3.Z5 p.mECLIPSE HANDICAP, of 180 sovs. 2min sosee class. Nobleman's forward running at dington on Saturday has brought him into favour, and he will not be troubled by soft going. Rongomai is improving, but may prefer a firm track, and Wise Guy and Aristotle cannot be recommended on their latest form. Young Travis has some good performances to his credit, and he should be prominent throughout. The places may be filled by Young Travis, Noblem»n. and Marie Celeste. 4 p.m. — AUTUMN HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Unhoppied trotters. 4min 56sec class. Two miles. Kippagh is a solid plodder when the speed is not too fast, and Sister Mary has previously shown ability to handle the big New Brighton track. Fairy Brooks, may handle the going well, and JLady Sonoma may improve on her Addington showing. The best prospects are held by Sister Mary, Kippagh, and Lady Sonoma.
