SALE OF MILE IN SHOPS

NECESSITY FOR CONTROL

EMPHASISED

RESULT OF AN AUCKLAND TEST

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

AUCKLAND, January 24.

The necessity for some control ovev shops that sell milk foy consumption on 'the premises was emphasised at a meeting of the Metropolitan Milk Council. li. was reported by the secretary, Mr Chapman, that a sample of milk from a shop not licensed to sell milk for taking away had shown a count of more than 1,000,000 bacteria a cubic centimetre. Some of the milk supplied in the shops was very bad, especially toward the end of the day*. Thfe did not apply to milk bars, as milk was supplied to them frequently and disposed of quickly. Mr Chapman said he understood that in Australia shops selling milk for immediate consumption, as well as milk bars, had to be licensed. The council's work would be greatly increased* if it undertook the inspection of these shops, as there were hundreds of them in the city,'but at present it had no power even to take tests from them.

The chairman, Mr G. W. Hutchison: How far should we go, though? Should we inspect teashops, too?

It was decided to confer with the Health Department.
