WINS FOR AUCKLAND, MANUKAU, AND PLIMMERTON
(PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGJBAM.)
AUCKLAND, January 24,
The fifth, sixth, and seventh races in the annual contest for the Cornwell Cup for Class Z (12ft 6in) Takapuna one design boats were held at Bayswater to-day, and resulted in wins for Auckland, Manukau, and Plimmerton respectively. A light wind was blowing. In the morning race, which was started practically in a flat calm, Christchurch lead throughout the first round. Auckland passed Christchurch on the second leg of the last round, and a change in the wind assisted Auckland to win by 33sec from Christchurch, Kaiapoi being third. The morning race was over a triangular course, which gave the boats a short beat, a close lead, and a broad lead, which near the finish developed into a beat to windward. The first afternoon race was sailed over a long windward and leeward course, twice round. Manukau early took the lead and beat Plimmerton by 12sec. Auckland was third. The second afternoon race was sailed over a triangular course, giving the boats a flat run, a broad lead, and a beat back, and proved the keenest race of the contest. Tauranga, Wellington, Manukau, Auckland, and Plimmerton showed a likelihood of winning, but Plimmerton finally stood off Manukau by 22sec. Auckland was third, 50sec later.
