REBUILDING NAPIER CATHEDRAL

MISSION TO ENGLAND FOR FUNDS.

To raise funds for the restoration of St. John's Cathedral, Napier, which was destroyed in the earthquake ojt 1931,' Dean Brocklehurst left Napier last week on his way to England* Before his departure he said he had no programme mapped out yet, nor could he say how long, he would remain in England. ' <

As to the prospects of raising money for a new Cathedral, he said he was unable to make much comment,- The sympathy vote for the jpeople of Napier and Hawke's Bay, he said, had died down in England. Moreover, he felt sure he would find himself in some communities where the people were feeling the effects of the bad times—people who a few years ago would have been able and willing to make donations.

"But I am depending to a great extent upon the good name enjoyed byNew Zealand in England," he added. ♦'This has developed particularly since the war." He agreed that the 1935-86 All Black team had helped this good name along substantially. Dean Brocklehurst will forward official reports to his headquarters in Napier from time to time, Although plans have not.yet been prepared, it is considered that £50,000 will be required for the rebuilding of the Cathedral.
