MOTORMAN COLLAPSES TRAMS COLLIDE IN WELLINGTON (press association telegbam.) WELLINGTON, January 20. Because a motorman collapsed in the Hataitai tunnel yesterday morning, his tram collided with the rear of a preceding tram, but no one was injured and only slight damage was done to the cars. The conductor could have stopped the runaway tram from the rear platform, but he was not aware of the rnotorman's sudden illness, and seeing the rnotorman's hat fall on to the road, ( he had left the car to .get it. By the time he had reached the cap, the car was well into the tunnel, and he was unable to reach it in time to prevent a collision. * There were no signs of panic the passengers. The motorman said, later, he thought his collapse was due to ptomaine poisoning. An investigation is to be held. COLLISION AT LOWER HUTT DEATH OF SECOND VICTIM (PRESS association telegram.) WELLINGTON, January 20. Charles Mildenhall, who v/as injured in a collision between a taxi and a private ear at Lower Hutt on Saturday night, died in hospital this morning. The driver of the car, Lillian Lowery, was killed instantly. A tragic feature of tlae accident was that the passengers in the taxi, Mr and Mrs S. Wilson, of Lower Hutt, with a daughter, were on their way to the hospital to see their dying child, who, however, died before their arrival. CAR FALLS 100 FEET DRIVER'S REMARKABLE ESCAPE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) MARTON, January 20. A miraculous escape was experienced on Sunday morning by Mr Walter Manning, a well-known stock buyer, when returning to Martin from the Turakina Valley in a motor-car. On a narrow portion of the road he met another car, and, endeavouring to pass, went over the bank, crashing through a scrub fence and falling 100 ft into the Makohau stream below. The car came to rest upside down. By a lucky chance the car's progress was checked at the last moment, and instead of entering the deep water side on. it straddled the bank out of the water sufficiently to allow Mr Manning to escape through the window. He was assisted to the road by the other motorist and was brought to Marton, suffering only from shock and minor injuries. The salvage of the car will present considerable difficulty. SEVERAL COLLISIONS IN WELLINGTON j NINE PERSONS INJURED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) j WELLINGTON, January 20. Several accidents occurred over the week-end. Mrs A. Birch and Mr R. Bezer were injured in a collision between two motor-cars near Porirua. A. Geddes sustained a compound fracture of the right leg in a collision between a motor-van and a motorcycle. J. Tullock was knocked over by a lorry and alighting from a tram-car. 7. Orr was knocked down by a i motor-cycle when getting off a tram, and a pillion rider on the same motorcycle, T. E. Meyer, sustained abrasions to the left leg. Both were taken to hospital. Y. N. Hegh fell from a motor-cycle when it skidded at a corner, injuring his head and right arm. Judith Oxley, aged 15J years, suffered a scalp wound and injury to her back when diving into the Hutt river near Moonshine. A small boy, John Skilton, was injured when a motor-car in which he was a passenger crashed into a powerline pole. CHILD DROWNED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) HAMILTON, January 20. In attempting to swim round the river steamer moored at the Hamilton wharf, Sylvia Hill, aged 11, was drowned in the Waikato river yesterday afternoon. The child, who was swimming with friends, disappeared at the stern of the boat. FATAL INJURIES (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) ROTORUA, January 20. Fatal injuries were received by a native, Haira Whareaitu, aged 18, when he was struck by a truck while running across the roadway near Whakarewarewa late this afternoon. W. Costello, driver of the truck, swerved sharply to the right side of the road in an effort to avoid the accident, but Whareaitu was struck and received severe head injuries. After being attended by a doctor he was ordered into the public hospitai, but died before admittance to the institution. KNOCKED OVER BY CAR Arthur Thomas Eaton, of 117 Sullivan street, was knocked down by a motor-car outside the Public Hospital shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was admitted to the hospital suffering head injuries. An operation was performed and his condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
